NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) earned two pitching victories and went a combined 5-for-9 with six runs batted in at the plate as Cortland remained unbeaten on the season with wins over Muhlenberg College, 6-4, and Mississippi University for Women, 11-7, at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Cortland (6-0) is scheduled to compete its South Carolina trip, weather permitting, with a doubleheader versus Castleton Saturday at 10 a.m.

Westenberg threw a complete game and earned the win despite allowing 13 hits. She fought her way out of trouble on a few occasions and ended the game with six strikeouts and no walks while allowing four runs, three earned. The Mules left eight runners on base, five in scoring position.
Westenberg also finished 2-for-4 offensively with a triple and three runs batted in.
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) went 2-for-3 with a triple and
Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Dragons.
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) was 1-for-3 with a double and
Anj Ferrara (Niskayuna), making her first collegiate start at second base, went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Four players accounted for 11 of the 13 hits for Muhlenberg (3-6). Ava Calabrese was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Sophia Cicchetti and Gillian Zack each went 3-for-4 and Maddy Svenningsen was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Justine Bergara went the distance in the circle for the Mules and allowed nine hits and six runs, three earned, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Muhlenberg scored twice in the second on a Calabrese RBI double and an error. Westenberg's two-out, two-run single tied it in the third, and Cortland tied it in the top of the fifth when Meyers tripled with two outs and scored on Westenberg's single to center.
The Red Dragons added what proved to be three important insurance runs in the sixth on an error, a
Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) single, and two-out RBI singles from Meyers and Ornstein. Muhlenberg cut the Cortland lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the inning on Svenningsen's two-run double before a flyout and pop-up ended the inning. Westenberg retired the Mules in order in the seventh – the only inning in which Muhlenberg didn't register a hit.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Meyers triple and a wild pitch, along with the help of two errors and a
Tori Reich (Cornwall) RBI single. The Owls (10-5) scored four times in the bottom of the first on a Rylie Grisham RBI single, an Alysa Newman 2-run double and a Maiya Joe RBI groundout, and they extended their lead to 5-2 in the third on Abby Schlude and Riley Phillips singles, an error during the Phillips single, and a Newman sacrifice fly.
Cortland broke out for six runs on six hits in the top of the fourth to go up 8-5, with all six runs crossing the plate with two outs. Scheibe singled with one out and, with two outs, Ferrara hit an RBI double to left center. Ornstein reached second on a throwing error, with Ferrara scoring on the play, to make it 5-4. Meyers singled to short, and on the throw to first Ornstein kept running and scored to tie the game. Meyers went to second and then scored on a Westenberg single, and
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) followed with a two-run homer to left.
Westenberg's RBI single in the sixth pushed the lead to 9-5, and the Red Dragons scored twice in the seventh on RBI singles by Ornstein and Westenberg. MUW closed the scoring with two in the bottom of the seventh on a Newman two-run double.
Westenberg went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, Scheibe was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, and Meyers was 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Ferrara ended 1-for-3 with a double and RBI and Ornstein went 1-for-4 with a walk, RBI and three runs scored.
Westenberg relieved Cortland starter
Kaeli Murtagh (Pine Bush) in the first and allowed two hits and one unearned run over two and two thirds innings. She struck out three batters and did not issue any walks. She was the pitcher of record when Cortland took the lead for good in the fourth and improved to 3-0 on the season. Barry took over in the fourth and pitched the final four innings for the save. She gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
Newman finished 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI, Grishman and Phillips were each 2-for-3 and Madison Crosby went 2-for-4 for the Owls. Avery Byerley suffered the loss after allowing eight runs, two earned, over three and two thirds innings. Only four of the 11 runs MUW allowed were earned as the Owls committed five errors.
