Cortland Drops Hard-Fought 64-59 Decision at No. 20 Trinity in NCAA Second Round

HARTFORD, CONN. – The Cortland women's basketball team had its season come to an end as the Red Dragons dropped a hard-fought 64-59 decision at nationally 20th-ranked Trinity College in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Cortland, which was making its third straight NCAA appearance, finishes the season with a 24-5 record. Trinity, also 24-5, advances to next Friday's NCAA third round versus Wisconsin-Whitewater as part of a four-team sectional at a site to be announced.

Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) led Cortland with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. She also totaled four assists and four rebounds. Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) hit 4-of-9 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) ended with eight points, Sarah Tully (East Aurora) had seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, and Julia Siler (Seaford) finished with four steals and six rebounds. Cortland shot 34 percent from the field, including 6-of-22 (27 percent) from the 3-point arc, and the Red Dragons were 9-of-11 from the foul line.

Reilly Campbell made 8-of-9 field goals and paced Trinity with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Wax added 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, Tori Varsamis hit 4-of-7 treys in a 12-point effort, and Indianna DelRocco poured in 10 points. The Bantams finished the game shooting 43 percent overall, 42 percent from 3-point range (5-of-12), and 15-of-21 from the free throw stripe.

The game featured 12 lead changes and four ties. Cortland led 17-14 after the first quarter, 24-20 at the media timeout midway through the second quarter, and 31-28 at halftime. The Red Dragons were up 33-30 with 8:47 left in the third quarter, but Trinity held Cortland scoreless for more than seven minutes to take a 40-33 lead. Tully ended the drought with a layup at the 1:21 mark, but the hosts scored four of the next six points and led 44-37 after three quarters.

Trinity's larges lead was nine on two occasions in the first minute of the fourth quarter following Campbell layups. Longford, however, nailed back-to-back 3-pointers and the Red Dragons were within three, 48-45, with 8:38 remaining.

Cortland was within three points on six other occasions in the fourth quarter but got not closer. Morano's layup with 2:22 left made it 60-57, but Campbell answered with a bucket at the 2:02 mark. Neither team scored again until Morano's layup with less than 20 seconds left cut the Trinity lead to 62-59. Campbell hit one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 17 seconds left and, after the Red Dragons missed a 3-pointer, Francesca Silva hit one free throw with two seconds left to create the final margin.
