NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team opened its spring schedule with a 5-4 victory over Farmingdale State in a match played at SUNY New Paltz. The match was decided when
Vyda Van Denburg (Kingston) won a tiebreaker to claim the victory at third singles.
Farmingdale led 2-1 after doubles play, with all three matches tightly contested. Farmingdale's Anastasia Hoffman and Amanda Jones won 8-6 at first doubles over
Diana Kozenyatko (Liverpool) and
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois), and the Rams' Lien Collings and MacKenzie Gisler won 8-6 over Van Denburg and
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) at second doubles. Cortland's doubles win came via an 8-6 decision by
Isabella Bonapace (Leonia, NJ) and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) over Rebecca Ness and Mikayla Demaria on the third flight.
Due to the high temperatures, the singles matches were played as eight-game pro sets instead of best-of-three sets. Cortland went ahead 3-2 after 8-1 wins by Morano at sixth singles and
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) at fifth singles. Farmingdale pushed back to a 4-3 lead after Collings won 8-4 at second singles and Hoffman won 8-5 at first singles.
Cubino knotted the team score at 4-4 after posting an 8-5 win at fourth singles. At third singles, Van Denburg and Jones battled to a 7-7 tie, forcing a tiebreaker to seven points to determine the team champion. Van Denburg won the tiebreaker 7-2, capped by a service ace, to give the Red Dragons the victory.
Cortland will stay in New Paltz on Saturday for the non-team scoring New Paltz Tournament, which will feature New Paltz, Hartwick, Farmingdale and Cortland.
