CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's golf team finished in fifth place out of seven schools in the upper division of the two-day Martin/Wallace Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons in excellent weather conditions Saturday and Sunday at the Cortland Country Club.
Cortland posted a 316 each day for a final score of 632, the second-best team score by the Red Dragons since the program re-started in 1998 and their best ever at their home venue. The 316 scores each day rank fifth on the school single-day scoring chart and are also the team's best ever at home.
Cortland played in the "Wallace" division of the event, which featured several nationally regarded schools. Nationally 14th-ranked Williams won the event with a two-day score of 582 (294-288), followed by 12th-ranked Amherst at 585 (288-297). Middlebury (299-293-592) and Hamilton (310-311-621), both among the "others receiving votes" section in the latest Division III national poll, finished third and fourth, respectively. Rounding out the seven-team division were Catholic University (326-328-654) and Wesleyan (Conn.) (335-323-658).
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) was Cortland's top performer, tying for 15th place out of 50 golfers with a 154. She posted a 78 on Saturday with two birdies and nine pars and tallied a 76 on Sunday with two birdies and 11 pars. Euna Lee of Williams was the tournament medalist with a two-under par 142 (71 each day).
Kristina Visniesky (Buffalo/Orchard Park) tied for 21st place with a 157. Her 78 on Saturday included two birdies and eight pars and her 79 Sunday featured a birdie and 10 pars.
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) tied for 28th place with a 159, highlighted by a 76 on Saturday that included four birdies and eight pars. She had a birdie and nine pars on Sunday on the way to an 83.
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson), as an individual entry, tied for 36th place with a 162. She birdied three holes and parred nine others during a round of 77 on Sunday and scored an 85 on Saturday with a birdie and nine pars.
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) registered an 87 and a 78 for a 165 and 41st place. She finished the weekend with three birdies and 15 pars, including two birds and 10 pars Sunday.
Alivia Waldron (Plattsburgh/Saranac) placed 42nd with a 169 (84-85) and
Rachel Curatolo (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill), as an individual entry, tied for 4tth with a 177 (90-87).
In the "Martin" division, Suffolk University finished first out of five schools with a 702 (354-348), followed by William Smith with a 759 (389-370). St. Lawrence's Mary Grace McCann was the medalist with a 162 (82-80), followed by Suffolk's Ellie Yarbrough with a 163 (81-82).
Cortland will compete at the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) Championship next Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, in Bloomfield, Conn. The Red Dragons have won the last three NWGC titles. Last spring's crown earned the Red Dragons the league's first NCAA automatic bid. Cortland also won NWGC crowns in the spring of 2021 and the fall of 2019, along with Empire 8 titles in 2017 and 2018 before that league disbanded.
