ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland softball team lost a pair of non-league games at defending Liberty League champion Rochester, falling 2-0 in the opener and 6-3 in the nightcap.
Cortland (8-4) will begin the home portion of its schedule Tuesday with a doubleheader versus St. John Fisher.
Rochester 2, Cortland 0
Molly Broccolo tossed a one-hit shutout for Rochester in the opener. She struck out three and walked one. Cortland had two runners on base in the first on an error and a
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) walk, but a double play ended that threat.
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) broke up Broccolo's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth.
Broccolo out-dueled
Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central), who went six innings in the circle for the Red Dragons. She gave up five hits and two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Rochester scored in the first on an error, a stolen base and a two-out error. The Yellowjackets added a run in the fourth on Lauren Keys' two-out, pinch-hit RBI single. Madi Turner finished 2-for-3 for Rochester.
Rochester 6, Cortland 3
Cortland held early 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Rochester tied the game in the bottom of the third and took the lead with a run in the fourth. The hosts posted three runs in the fifth to go up 6-2, with Cortland getting a run back in the top of the seventh.
Keys started for Rochester and allowed two runs in three innings. Maddie White pitched the final four innings for the victory. She gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Barry allowed three runs in four innings as Cortland's starter. She permitted five hits and a walk and fanned one batter.
Elaina Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) each went 2-for-4 for the Red Dragons. Ornstein scored two runs and Meyers drove in a run and scored once. Scotto, Barry and
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) each went 1-for-3. Bailey Nicholoff and Jenna Goreck each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Hunter Gilbreath drove in two runs for Rochester (11-5).
Cortland scored in the first on a Barry RBI double and Rochester tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Gorecki's RBI single. In the third, Ornstein led off with a single, stole second with one out and, after a Barry walk, stole third.
Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) drove in Ornstein with a sac fly to right.
Rochester tied the game in the bottom of the third when Ally Kim led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Nicholoff sac fly to center. The Yellowjackets took the lead in the fourth on a hit batter, a sac bunt, a steal and a wild pitch. Rochester's three-run fifth was highlighted by a Savannah Nowak RBI double and a Gilbreath two-run double. Cortland scored in the seventh when Ornstein singled with two outs and scored on a Meyers double to center.
