GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland rallied from a three-run deficit over the final two innings in Game 1 and
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game as the Red Dragons swept defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo, 4-3 and 6-0, in a road league doubleheader.
Cortland improved to 17-11 overall and 8-4 in the conference with the victories. Geneseo is now 15-12-1 overall and 6-6 in the league. Cortland and Geneseo have played in the last four SUNYAC tournament finals, with Cortland winning in 2019 and Geneseo victorious in 2018, 2021 and 2022.
Cortland will host Ithaca in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. and also will be home for league twinbills Friday versus Fredonia and Saturday against Buffalo State.
Cortland 4, Geneseo 3
After four and a half scoreless innings, Geneseo got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a combination of four hits, a walk and three Cortland errors. Rebecca Schwartz singled in the Knights' first run, the second run scored on an error after a Samantha Martz single, and the third run scored on an error on a ball hit by Olivia Fazio.
Cortland tied the game in the top of the sixth. Barry and
Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led off with singles and
Tori Reich (Cornwall) drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) followed with a three-run double to right center to score Barry, pinch runner
Anj Ferrara (Niskayuna) and Reich.
In the top of the seventh, Barry walked with one out and, with two outs, advanced to second and third on wild pitches.
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) doubled to center to drive home Barry with the go-ahead run.
Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) allowed just a one-out single in the seventh before a flyout and strikeout ended the game. Weeden, now 7-6, allowed three runs, two earned, over seven innings. She gave up 11 hits and one walk and struck out six.
Reich finished 2-for-3 with a walk and Scheibe went 1-for-2 with a double, hit by pitch and three RBI. Barry was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored and Scotto closed the game 1-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI.
Geneseo starter Elizabeth Eberhardt gave up five hits and three runs with two walks in a no decision over five and a third innings. Mattie Woodard took the loss after allowing the run in the seventh. Schwartz, Brooke Fraas and Martz each finished 2-for-4.
Cortland 6, Geneseo 0
Barry upped her record to 6-2 with the two-hit shutout. She struck out two and walked two. Kaitlyn Schmitz went five innings for the hosts and gave up five hits and four runs with a strikeout and a walk.
Cortland struck for two runs in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run single by Scotto. The Red Dragons' other four runs came in the sixth on a Westenberg two-run double, a
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) RBI triple and a
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) RBI single.
Scotto finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Meyers was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI and Reich went 2-for-4. Westenberg ended 1-for-2 with a double, hit by pitch and two RBI and Wright was 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI.
Martz and Sydney Bolton each finished 1-for-3 for Geneseo. The Knights had only one runner reach scoring position versus Barry when they stranded runners on first and second in the second inning.
