BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis season came to a close as the third-seeded Red Dragons lost to second-seeded Oneonta, 5-3, in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals at the Binghamton Tennis Club.
Cortland concludes the combined fall/spring season with a 7-5 record. Oneonta (9-14), the defending SUNYAC champion, will face top-seeded New Paltz in the finals Saturday at 1 p.m.
Oneonta led 2-1 after doubles play. Julia Holtermann and Maxie Karen won 8-4 at first doubles and Sophia Schutte and Brianna Shaw won 8-1 at second doubles. Cortland earned a point at third doubles was
Karlie Cubino (Marcy/Whitesboro) and
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) posted an 8-3 victory.
Cortland's victories in singles action came from Cubino at fifth singles, who won 6-2, 6-2, and
Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott), who swept her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles. Oneonta, however, claimed three of the top four flights - Holtermann with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number one, Schutte with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number two and Karen with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number four. The third singles match was in progress, with Shaw leading Cortland's
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois), 6-4, 3-2, when Oneonta clinched the team title, so that match is officially considered unfinished.
Prior to the match,
Emma Madigan was recognized as the SUNYAC's Elite 20 Award Winner as the player at the SUNYAC finals site with the highest overall GPA. The sophomore psychology major has a 3.98 GPA entering the spring semester.
