HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. – In a truly bizarre ending to the season, the Cortland women's golf team completed its rounds during Thursday's third day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships, only to have the entire day of the tournament canceled by the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee.
The committee's announcement on Thursday evening included the following:
The NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee has determined that round 3 will officially be canceled on the grounds of an unplayable hole for the entire tournament field. As play continued throughout round 3 it became apparent that the pin placement on Hole 6 was too severe for play.
With this decision being made, we will now conclude the championship as a 54-hole tournament with the final round being seeded off of the completion of round 2. The top-15 teams will advance to the final round, as well as the Top-12 individuals not on one of those 15 teams.
As a result, none of Cortland's scores on Thursday counted, turning the day into basically a glorified practice/exhibition round.
The Red Dragons finished in 26th place in the 29-team field at the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club with its two-day score of 717 (361-356) from Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sophomore
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) was Cortland's top performer with a two-day total of 175 (91-84) on the par-73 layout. Graduate student
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) finished one stroke behind Oristian with a 176 (86-90). Sophomore
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) finished with a 184 (93-91), freshman
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) ended with a 186 (91-95) and senior
Alivia Waldron (Plattsburgh/Saranac) finished with a 188 (97-91).
Cortland was playing in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. The Red Dragons, who earned an NCAA automatic berth as the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) champion, finished in 24th place at the 2022 championship in Houston.
