Cortland Eliminated from SUNYAC Tourney After Losses to Geneseo and New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team was eliminated from the SUNYAC tournament with losses to Geneseo, 3-2 in 10 innings, and host New Paltz, 5-0, during Friday's second day of competition at the six-team, double-elimination tournament.

Cortland's season has likely come to an end with a 24-13 record. The Red Dragons are potentially eligible to earn an NCAA tournament at-large berth - those bids will be announced on Monday.

Geneseo 3, Cortland 2 (10 inn.)

Geneseo broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 10th when Iris Kahris singled with one out and scored on a Rebecca Schwartz two-out triple. In the bottom of the 10th Gina Meyers (Liverpool) led off with a single for Cortland, moved to second on a Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) sac bunt and took third on a groundout before another groundout ended the game.

Geneseo led 2-0 with a run in the third on a Schwartz sac fly and a run in the sixth on an error. Cortland tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Meyers singled, went to second on a Wright bunt and advanced to third on a passed ball. An error during a fielder's choice allowed Meyers to score, and later in the inning Tori Reich's (Cornwall) RBI infield single tied the game. Cortland attempted to scored the go-ahead run on Reich's single but a runner was thrown out at the plate.

Karlee Weeden (Maybrook/Valley Central) went the full 10 innings in the circle for Cortland, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Elizabeth Eberhardt started for Geneseo (23-16-1) and gave up two unearned runs in five and a third innings. Kaitlyn Schmitz earned the win after tossing four and two thirds scoreless innings with three hits allowed.

Reich went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Kimberly Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) was 2-for-4 with a double and Meyers finished 2-for-5 for the Red Dragons. Schwartz ended 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Kahris was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Knights.

New Paltz 5, Cortland 0

New Paltz, the tournament's top seed, eliminated the second-seeded Red Dragons behind Lindsay Roman's three-hit shutout. She struck out three and walked one. McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tossed a complete game for Cortland, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings.

New Paltz scored in the first on Juliet Bernstein's sac fly and in the third when a batter reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Cortland stranded runners on second in the third and fourth innings and had runners on second and third in the sixth before Roman induced a pop-out to end the threat. New Paltz iced the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Jackie Rometo RBI single and a Sydney Bonewit two-run double.

Kelly Marmorowski was 2-for-2 with a walk and Bonewit finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Hawks. Barry went 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) and Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) each went 1-for-3 for the Red Dragons.
