Cortland Earns Top SUNYAC Baseball Player, Rookie and Coaching Awards

Eight members of the SUNY Cortland baseball team have been selected to the 2023 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) all-league team in a vote of the league's coaches. In addition, sophomore outfielder Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) has been named the league's Bob "Sparky" Wallace Co-Player of the Year, freshman pitcher Shane Van Dam (Cranford, NJ) is the Clark V. Whited Co-Rookie of the Year, and head coach Joe Brown is the Walter Nitardy SUNYAC Coach of the Year.

Six Red Dragons were named to the all-league first team - Mieczkowski, sophomore pitcher Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury), sophomore catcher Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck), junior first baseman Matthew Krafft (Cornwall), sophomore outfielder Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) and sophomore designated hitter Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee). Graduate student outfielder Mat Bruno (Rye) and freshman relief pitcher Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) were second-team selections. Van Dam, although being the Rookie of the Year, was not named to the all-league teams since upperclassmen filled the top six primary pitching spots.

Brown earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year and ninth time overall in his 24-year tenure as Cortland's head coach. He's led the Red Dragons to a 32-11 record, to date. Cortland extended its Division III record to 30 straight NCAA tournament appearances (1993-2023; no tournament in 2020) after earning a postseason at-large berth and will host a four-team NCAA regional this Friday through Sunday, May 19-21.

Mieczkowski shared Player of the Year honors with Brockport's Zach Eldred. The award is named for Cortland's legendary former head coach, who won 366 games and 10 SUNYAC titles during his 25 seasons as head coach from 1958-82. Mieczkowski has played in 39 games this season, 33 as a starter, and is hitting .366 with 12 homers, five doubles, three triples, 43 RBI, 39 runs and a .786 slugging percentage. He posted seven homers, 23 RBI and 19 runs scored in 18 regular-season league games.

Van Dam shared Rookie of the Year recognition with New Paltz's Christopher Sais. In 14 appearances this spring, Van Dam has a 2-1 record with a 3.12 ERA. He's struck out 41 batters and has allowed only 15 hits in 26 innings pitched. In six league games, Van Dam allowed only six hits and struck out 25 hitters in 16 and a third innings.

Beers was a perfect 6-0 in six regular-season league starts with a 1.91 ERA. In 37 and two thirds innings he allowed 20 hits and six walks and struck out 41 batters. Overall, Beers is 8-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 11 games, 10 as a starter, with 30 hits and 13 walks allowed and 56 strikeouts in 57 and two thirds innings.

Kringdon is batting .327 with three homers, three doubles and 18 RBI in 39 games, 29 as a starter. He's also thrown out seven potential base stealers. Kringdon hit two homers and drove in 10 runs in 17 regular-season league games.

Krafft has started all 43 games and his batting .375 with seven doubles, a triple, 31 RBI, 36 runs scored and nine steals. He's walked 14 times, been hit by pitches 14 times and has a .471 on-base percentage. In 18 SUNYAC regular-season games, Krafft hit .429 with 14 RBI and a .493 on-base percentage.

Bonacci also has started all 43 games this spring. He's batting a team-best .415 with six doubles, three triples, 22 RBI, 54 runs and 12 steals. His .505 on-base percentage also includes 19 walks and 12 hit by pitches.

Chemotti is batting .374 with 11 doubles, two triples, three homers, 37 RBI, 40 runs, 18 walks and three steals in 41 games, 39 as a starter. In 18 league contests he batted .391 with 20 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Bruno has played in 42 games, 41 as a starter, and is hitting .379 with seven homers, 13 doubles, a triple, 46 RBI and 44 runs scored. He's walked 20 times and has stolen 11 bases. He registered four homers, 27 RBI, 20 runs and seven steals in 18 league games.

Lynch went 2-0 with two saves and a 3.12 ERA in seven league appearances. Overall, he's recorded three saves and has struck out 25 batters with just eight walks in 21 and a two thirds innings.
