HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. – The Cortland women's golf team is currently in 26th place after the first day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships. The championship is being held on the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club.
Cortland finished with a score of 361, less than 10 strokes away from the five schools immediately above the Red Dragons in the standings. Emory University is the team leader after Day 1 at 315, followed by George Fox at 318 and Washington-St. Louis and Carnegie Mellon tied for third at 319.
Cortland's tee-off times for Wednesday's second round begin at 7:20 a.m. The event continues Thursday, after which point the field will be reduced to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those teams for Friday's final round.
Graduate student
Amanda Gaffney (Williamsville/Williamsville East) is currently tied for 72nd place out of 151 golfers with a score of 86 over a par-73 layout. She posted a five-over par 41 on the front nine with a birdie and three pars and posted five pars and scored a 45 on the back nine.
Freshman
Sarah Wiggins (Carson City, NV/Carson) and sophomore
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) are tied for 114th place, each with a 91. Wiggins scored a 43 and a 48, with her opening nine featuring two birdies and three pars, and Oristian had a 46 and a 45 with a birdie and two pars on the front and five pars on the back.
Rounding out Cortland's contingent was sophomore
Claudia Winterberg (Harrisburg, NC/Hickory Ridge) with a 93 (48-45) and senior
Alivia Waldron (Plattsburgh/Saranac) with a 97 (50-47). Winterberg's round included a birdie and two pars on the front and four pars on the back. Waldron finished the day with four pars, three on the back nine.
