MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Cortland field hockey team opened up a 3-0 lead at the half and held on to defeat Montclair St., 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the season-opening game for both teams.

Junior Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) led the Red Dragons with two goals in her first game as a Red Dragon. Senior Madison Rice (Greene/Greene Central) and junior Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) each added a goal, while junior Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) and sophomore Molly Miller (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) recorded one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made a career-high 11 saves, and senior Madison Rice (Greene/Greene Central) recorded a defensive save.

Gab Maisto paced the Red Hawks with a goal and an assist. Carly Amerman also tallied a goal. Goalie McKenna Laman stopped three shots.

Ettere gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 10:36 into the game when she blasted a loose ball through Laman's pads after knocking down a shot in front. Rice made it a 2-0 score at 25:32, deflecting a pass from Corrigan on the right side after a Cortland penalty corner. Trunfio put the Red Dragons up 3-0 heading into the break when she converted a penalty stroke just 20 seconds before the half.

The Red Hawks tightened the game with a pair of third-quarter goals just 38 seconds apart. Amerman scored on a deflection over Morgan's head on a penalty corner at 42:28, and Maisto lifted a penalty stroke inside the left post at 43:06 to make it a 3-2 game. Trunfio added a key insurance goal 4:48 into the fourth quarter, finishing off a cross from the right by Miller near the left post for the 4-2 final.
