WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team finished eighth out of 16 schools at the Budd Whitehill National Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The Red Dragons (3-5) dropped their opening match to nationally 22nd-ranked Springfield College, 27-17, in the 5-8 place group and completed the weekend with a 43-2 setback to Ithaca College.

Against Springfield, Cortland took a 17-12 lead after the first six weight classes. After surrendering a forfeit at 125 pounds, junior Cody Merwin (Walton) earned a 5-3 decision at 133 pounds and freshman Culley Bellino (Canastota) recorded his team-high 15th pin in 1:58 at 141 pounds.

The Pride registered a fall at 149 pounds to hold a 12-9 lead, but sophomore Christian Paredes (East Moriches/Connetquot) earned a 12-4 major decision at 157 pounds and junior Hunter Hughes (Selden/Newfield) followed with a 14-5 major decision at 157 pounds. Springfield, however, closed the match by winning the last four bouts to secure the 27-17 victory.

In the match against Ithaca, Cortland forfeited two weight classes, while the Bombers recorded two technical falls and two pins. The Red Dragons earned a 1-0 decision from sophomore Noah Orser (Carmel) at 149 pounds. Cortland was deducted a point at the conclusion of the match. 

Sophomore Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) was named to the all-tournament team at 149 pounds based on earning the most team points per match as an undefeated wrestler.
