Kendall Sobczyk Breaks School 60-Meter Dash Record at Ithaca Meet

Kendall Sobczyk won the 60-meter dash with a school-record time of 7.77 seconds
ITHACA, N.Y. – Led by a school record-setting performance by Kendall Sobczyk (Wheatfield/Niagara Wheatfield), the Cortland women's indoor track and field team finished in third place at a quad meet hosted by Ithaca College.

TCNJ placed first with 61.75 points, followed by Ithaca at 38.5 points, Cortland with 36.75 points and Oneonta with 27 points. First place finishes earned five points, followed by three points for second, two points for third, and one point for fourth (except for relays, where only the top three places scored and schools were limited to one scoring team).

Sobczyk set the school record in the 60-meter dash with her winning time of 7.77 seconds. She broke the previous mark of 7.78 seconds set by Sarah Bonnell in both March of 2012 and February of 2013. The effort is an AARTFC qualifier and ranks 23rd nationally in Division III as of Saturday evening. Sobczyk also finished third in the 200-meter dash (27.01).

Avery Hebert (Stillwater) was Cortland's other winner at the meet with a time of 1:21.61 in the 500 meters.

The Red Dragons posted five second-place showings. Autumn Pittman (Spring Valley/Ramapo) was second in both the 60-meter dash (7.84) and 200-meter dash (26.58). Yasmine Peralta (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) was second in the 500 meters (1:22.99) and Reilly Quinn (Beekmantown) tied for second in the high jump (1.53 meters/5' 0.25"). The tandem of Peralta, Maris Seabury (Old Chatham/Ichabod Crane), Izzie Bosko (Hillsdale/Taconic Hills) and Hebert placed second in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:12.26.

Seabury placed third in the 500 meters (1:24.19), Alexa Wolcott (Wyoming/Pavilion) was third in the mile run (5:25.15) and Caitlin Maher (Hartsdale/Ardsley) finished third in the triple jump (10.00 meters/32' 9.75"). The Red Dragons' fourth-place finishers included Bosko in the 500 meters (1:27.13), Sydney Smith (Greenville) in the mile (5:25.52), Regan Kaiser (Queensbury/Glens Falls) in the high jump (1.48 meters/4' 10.25"), Faith Hoyt (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) in the pole vault (2.85 meters/9' 4.25"), and Quinn in the triple jump (tied for fourth, 9.86 meters/32' 4.25").

In addition, Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) placed third in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with an AARTFC mark of 9.24 seconds, but she did not compete in the finals.

Cortland returns to action next Saturday at the Nazareth College Conference Challenge Cup.

Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:

We're really impressed as a coaching staff with the attitude and approach that the team took today. We had a lot of folks who are tired from the tough work they have committed to do during winter break, so there were a lot of 'heavy' legs and a general fatigue with what we were doing.

We saw a lot of great efforts and focus on our attitude about how we are going compete, about how we need to execute the skills in the various events properly, and how this meet is a part of our overall development across the season.

To identify a few highlights on the day, the women's 60m group ran incredibly well, with Kendall Sobczyk setting a new school record, Autumn Pittman with a huge PR to tie our #3 all-time mark, and Gianna Motto hitting a new PR in the event. Deontae Bennett put together a strong day as well, with a great mark in the long jump and a big PR in the 60. Avery Hebert came through with a solid 500, and a sub-60 second leg in the 4x400 relay. Amarian Hughes not only had a strong performance in the long jump, but came through with a big triple jump, especially for early in the season. Hannah McMasters put up a new PR in the weight throw, as did Isaiah Brunache. There are a number of other folks that hit personal records either all-time or specific to indoor track, which is really quite exciting!

With classes beginning again on Monday, we will be back into a somewhat 'normal' schedule, and are looking forward to a bit more of a recovery week of training before heading to Nazareth College for the 2024 Conference Cup!
