BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team earned a 5-4 win at Buffalo St. in SUNYAC action Sunday afternoon in a game postponed two days due to inclement weather. The Red Dragons improved to 11-5-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the conference and currently sit third in the league standings. The Bengals dropped to 7-11 and 4-7.
Sophomore
Devlin O'Kane (Chicago, IL/New Jersey 87's) led Cortland with a pair of goals. Senior
Cameron Knowlton (Kenai, AK/Charlotte Rush) recorded a goal and an assist, and senior
Sutter Donegan (Cicero/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and junior
Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Junior Islanders) each netted a goal.
Freshman
Sam Nichols (North Tonawanda/Islanders Hockey Club) collected two assists, while seven others picked up one assist, including senior goalie
Jack Riedell (Greensboro, NC/Charlotte Rush) who turned aside 23 shots to earn his sixth win of the season.
Jared Figueroa and Jake Meure paced Buffalo St. with one goal and two assists. Tyler Penree and Vadim Kiriakov each scored a goal with Jason Kwestel and Timur Gavrilovich chipping in with two assists apiece. Marcus Cumberworth started in goal, making seven saves in 19:36 before giving way to Drew Doran who stopped 24 shots in 38:25.
Cortland led 3-2 at the end of the first period as Bernardo scored on a loose puck in front at 2:59, O'Kane beat Cumberworth with a deflection in the slot at 12:02 and Knowlton slid a shot inside the right post from the left circle at 19:36.
Donegan made it a 4-2 game at 14:56 of the second period with a one-time shot from the bottom of the left circle. The Bengals tied the game with two early goals in the third period, one each from Meure at 37 seconds and Figueroa at 2:23. O'Kane scored the game winner just over three minutes later. Riedell fired the puck around the boards, and the puck eluded a Bengal defender at the blue line. Brophy gathered the puck and slid a pass to O'Kane in front who one-timed a shot past Doran.
With the game still in the balance, Cortland was whistled for a penalty at the 18:25 mark of the third period. The Bengals pulled Doran for an extra skater with 1:13 remaining in regulation, but Cortland held Buffalo St. without a shot on goal to clinch the 5-4 victory.
