CORTLAND, N.Y. – Oswego closed the first half on a 21-5 run to take a 10-point halftime lead and the nationally sixth-ranked Lakers defeated host Cortland, 71-52, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.
Cortland dropped to 8-10 overall and 5-6 in the SUNYAC. Oswego remained unbeaten in league play at 11-0 and is now 17-1 overall.
Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) led Cortland with a career-high 24 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor and he totaled two blocks and two assists.
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and
Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) added seven points and six rebounds and
Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) grabbed seven rebounds.
Jeremiah Sparks led four Oswego double-figure scorers with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He also totaled five rebounds and three steals. Ahkee Anderson tallied 18 points and five boards, Cartier Bowman scored 10 points and led the guests with seven rebounds, and Jamal Achille scored 10 points and hauled in five rebounds.
Cortland held Oswego to just seven points over the first 13 minutes and led 13-7. The Lakers, however, fought back to take a 28-18 lead at halftime and led by 12 early in the second half. Cortland clawed back to within five at 37-32 on a Warmack layup with 11:57 left, but two Bowman baskets, a Julien Crittendon 3-pointer and another Bowman bucket put the Lakers up by 14 with 9:38 left. Cortland briefly got to within nine, 50-41, with 7:07 left but Anderson and Kaleb Cook hit treys to push the margin to 15 and the lead remained in double figures from that point.
Cortland will host Oneonta Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
