Cortland Falls in OT to Visiting Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brockport's Alex Tavarez scored 12 of his game-high 30 points in overtime as the Golden Eagles defeated host Cortland, 80-72, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest. 
 
Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) led four double-figure scorers for Cortland 6-5, 3-1 SUNYAC) with 18 points. He made 8-of-13 shots. Arcuri also shared the team lead with seven rebounds and added three assists and three steals. Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) scored 14 points, including 9-of-9 accuracy from the free throw line, and pulled down seven rebounds. Danny Linehan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) ended with 12 points and three assists and Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) had 10 points and five rebounds. TayShaun Hawkins (Riverhead) made three 3-points in a nine-point effort. 
 
Tavarez went 11-for-17 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the foul line for Brockport (6-4, 2-2 SUNYAC). Caquan Wester registered a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Tony Arnold had nine points, seven assists and three steals. Danny Ashley led the Golden Eagles with seven steals. 
 
Cortland led 33-29 at halftime and took its largest lead at 45-33 on a Hawkins 3-pointer with 16:35 left. Brockport worked its way back into the game and eventually took a 57-56 lead on a Wester layup with 7:55 remaining. Warmack's trey put Cortland on top, 57-55, with 5:57 left. 
 
Ashley's layup at the 2:30 mark tied the score at 60-60. Arcuri hit a layup and was fouled with 1:05 left in regulation to give Cortland the lead, but missed the free throw, and Brockport tied the game on a Wester layup with 28 seconds ticks left. Cortland turned the ball over in the closing seconds of regulation. 
 
Brockport scored nine straight points – four by Wester and three by Alvarez - in the first 1:50 of overtime to take a 71-62 lead. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to 76-65 with 1:03 left and led by at least six from that point. Tavarez hit 6-of-7 free throws in the extra session. 
 
Cortland travels to New Paltz on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
