POTSDAM, N.Y. – Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) scored a pair of second-half goals to lead the nationally-25th ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory on the road at Potsdam on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Cortland improves to 9-3-3 (3-1-1 SUNYAC) on the year, while Potsdam drops to 5-6-2 (1-4-0 SUNYAC).
Matias Valenzuela Matic (Santiago, Chile/Northwood School),
Matt Shultz (Oneonta), and
Muiz Bayewu (Lagos, Nigeria/Albany, NY) each recorded an assist for the Red Dragons, while goalkeeper
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) stopped four shots in goal for his third shutout of the year.
Christiano Lozier led Potsdam with two shots on goal, while Zach Cunningham and Kyan Tiede each had one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Lucas Schiel made three saves.
Shultz had the first shot on target of the game in the 12th minute, but Schiel was able to make the save. Potsdam recorded its first shot on goal in the 25th minute, which Ott handled well.
In the 45th minute, Choukri sent a shot that was saved by Schiel as time expired in the half with a scoreless tie.
The Red Dragons got on the board first in the 68th minute as a result of solid passing. Stylin Acosta (Brentwood) sent a cross from the right to the back post, where Valenzuela Matic headed a pass down to Shultz. The senior then sent a ball across the face of the goal to the right post, where Choukri tapped the pass home for his fifth goal of the season.
The Red Dragons wasted little time adding to the lead, scoring an insurance goal in the 73rd minute after a defensive misplay by Potsdam. With the Bears pressing for an equalizer,
Jack Pinnata (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) blocked a shot and Bayewu sent a ball soaring into the air from the Cortland end of the field. The ball took two bounces and went over the head of Schiel, who had raced out of his goal to make a play. Choukri then easily outran the keeper and tapped the ball into the open goal for his second goal of the game.
Potsdam could only muster one shot on goal the rest of the way in the 85th minute, which Ott stopped to secure the shutout.
