Cortland Powers Past Morrisville 7-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Piper Klammer (Mahopac), Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook), and Liz Allen (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) each scored a pair of goals as the Cortland women's soccer team defeated 7-0 on Holloway Field in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon. Cortland has now won six straight games and moves to 8-2-4 (6-0-1 SUNYAC), while Morrisville drops to 1-10-2 (1-6-0 SUNYAC).

Allen and Vuotto each had three shots on goal to lead Cortland, while Klammer had two shots on goal. Sage Luke (Schenectady/Scotia-Glenville) scored the seventh goal for Cortland. Jillian Nicolosi (Farmingdale/St. Anthony's) had her first two assists of the year, while Katie Cosenza (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) also had an assist. Cortland did not allow Morrisville to have a shot attempt, with Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ), Nicole Blazo (Massapequa/St. Anthony's), and Mia Hosbach (Marion) combining for the shutout.

Kayle Roberts made seven saves in goal for Morrisville.

Cortland came out of the gates strong, holding onto possession of the ball for much of the opening portion of the game, but couldn't capitalize on its early scoring attempts as a pair of shot attempts went over the crossbar.

In the 19th minute, Cortland struck for the first goal. Cosenza took the ball down the left side of the field, before sending a through ball on the ground that Klammer was able to finish off with a left-footed shot.

Just two minutes later, Nicolosi sent a pass over the top of the defense from the Cortland back line, and Klammer was able to outrun the defenders and poke a shot into the bottom left corner ahead of the onrushing Roberts.

The Red Dragons scored a nearly identical goal in the 23rd minute, with Nicolosi once again floating a pass over the top of the defense. This time, Vuotto was the first to the ball, and knocked a right-footed volley into the right corner of the net as Cortland as able to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Cortland added four more goals in the second half to secure the win.

In the 65th minute, Vuotto intercepted a clearance attempt by Morrisville, and sent a curling right-footed shot into the right corner of the net to make it 4-0.

Allen netted her first goal since the first game of the year in the 73rd minute, dribbling through a pack of Morrisville defenders before slotting home with her right foot. Only 66 seconds later, Allen was fouled in the penalty area, and blasted her spot kick into the upper left corner of the net.

Luke completed the scoring for Cortland in the 87th minute with her first goal of the season from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. The junior went low and to the left to score with her penalty kick out of the reach of a diving Roberts.
