Shultz Sets Career Points Record as #21 Cortland Downs Delhi 3-0 for Fifth Straight Win

DELHI, N.Y. – Matt Shultz (Oneonta) scored his fifth goal in the last three games, and set the Cortland all-time career points recorded, as the nationally 21st-ranked Cortland men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory on the road at Delhi on Sunday afternoon. Cortland has won five games in a row and improves to 12-3-3, while Delhi falls to 7-5-4.

Shultz's goal gives him 92 career points, breaking Mike Borra's career points record of 90. Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) scored his sixth goal in the last five games, and netted for the fifth consecutive game for Cortland. Luke van Galen (Georgetown, MA) played the first half and made one save, and Will Stanley (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam) supervised a clean second half to secure the fourth straight shutout for the Red Dragons.

Salvatore Meloni made seven saves for the Broncos, and Roberto Velasquez-Osorio had Delhi's lone shot on goal.

The Red Dragons took an early lead in the 14th minute, as Alex Lessman (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) stepped in to intercept a pass by the Broncos. The ball went to Shultz, who dribbled around a pair of defenders and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net from distance.

Delhi forced van Galen to make his only save in the 19th minute, with the junior stopping a shot right at him. Cortland nearly doubled its advantage with twenty minutes left in the half, but Meloni made a strong save on Shultz and then saw a follow-up from the Red Dragons go off of the crossbar. Cortland had a 9-2 advantage in shot attempts in the first half, leading 1-0 at halftime.

The Red Dragons made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute from the penalty spot after Logan Comfort's (Cazenovia) shot from distance was blocked by the arm of a Delhi defender for a handball. Choukri stepped up to take the penalty and calmly passed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net as Meloni dove the other way.

Cortland completed the scoring in the 64th minute, as Stalyn Acosta (Brentwood) sent a cross from the left endline, which was kicked by a Bronco into the net for an own goal.

The Red Dragons had 13 shots in the second half, and didn't allow Delhi to have a shot on target.
