Cortland Remains Unbeaten in SUNYAC with Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 victory at Fredonia.
 
Cortland (20-5, 7-0 SUNYAC) will play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Buffalo State, which at 6-0 is the only other undefeated team in league play. The Red Dragons then wrap up the SUNYAC regular-season schedule next Tuesday at Morrisville, which is now 6-1 in the league after losing Friday at Buffalo State.
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led Cortland versus the Blue Devils with nine kills and was second on the team with 11 digs. Kyrah Wilbur (Syracuse/Baldwinsville) finished with seven kills and team highs of three aces and 13 digs and Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) had five kills and one error in 15 attempts.
 
Emalee Ballou (Eden) and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) each added four kills. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) handed out 15 assists, with Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) finishing with 13 assists. Rodriguez also finished with eight digs. Guedez and Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) shared the team lead with four blocks each.
 
Kylie O'Brien led Fredonia (9-15, 2-4 SUNYAC) with 12 kills and Molly Cassidy had 15 assists.
 
Cortland never trailed in the first set, although Fredonia did score seven straight points after trailing 24-9 before a Wilbur kill ended the set. Fredonia led 18-16 in the second set before the Red Dragons tallied four straight points, including two Pilkey kills. Leading 20-19, Cortland closed the set on a 5-0 run, capped by a kill from Pilkey. Cortland led 10-4 in the first set and held a 21-13 lead until Fredonia fought back to within 22-18. Erica Arroyo (Nesconset/Smithtown West) and Guedez had kills to provide the 23rd and 25th points, respectively.
