Cortland Registers 5-2 Win vs. Oneonta

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team improved to 2-1 in SUNYAC play with a 5-2 victory over Oneonta in a match played at the Lane - Starke Tennis Center.

The Red Dragons, now 5-3 overall, are in third place out of six schools in the conference standings with their 2-1 league mark. Cortland will face Plattsburgh Friday and defending league champ New Paltz Saturday, both in Binghamton. The top four teams in the league standings qualify for next spring's conference tournament.

Cortland opened the match versus Oneonta (3-3, 0-3 SUNYAC) by earning the team doubles point after claiming two of three matches. Christina Massoni (West Babylon) and Emma Madigan (Endicott/Union-Endicott) won 6-4 at first doubles and Preston Fuerbacher (Fairport) and JayLynn Robinson (Evans Mills/Indian River) won 6-2 at third doubles. Cortland almost swept the doubles flights, but Oneonta's Kelly Hayes and Taylor Plue edged Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington), 7-5, at second doubles.

Gabrielle Stanley (Buffalo/Niagara-Wheatfield) made quick work of her match at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, to give Cortland a 2-0 lead, and Madigan followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles to make it 3-0. Fuerbacher clinched the victory when she pulled away from a 2-2 tie in the second set to win 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles. Oneonta picked up wins from Danielle Copp at second singles, 6-3, 6-4, and Annika Cripe at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-3, and Cortland wrapped up the day with a victory when Massoni won at first singles, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, with a super tiebreaker to 10 points in place of a third set since the team victory was already decided.
