CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team dropped its regular season finale by a 1-0 score to nationally 11th-ranked William Smith on Wednesday evening on Holloway Field. Cortland falls to 10-3-4, while William Smith is 10-3-3.
Cam Stone (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) led Cortland with two shots on goal, while
Piper Klammer (Mahopac) and
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) each had one shot on target.
Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) stopped four shots in goal for the Red Dragons.
Moira van der Putt scored the goal for William Smith, and goalkeeper Kirsten Nelson made four saves for the shutout.
Cortland had the first chance of the game just 21 seconds into play, but Nelson dove to stop a shot by Stone that was headed into the bottom right corner of the net.
In the 17th minute, Klammer saw her header off a cross from a corner kick by
Nyah Sinkler (Farmingville/Sachem East) go just wide of the left post.
Less than two minutes later, the Herons took the lead on the only goal of the game. Nelson started the play with a powerful goal kick, which the Cortland defense was unable to clear on two separate attempts. The second clearance attempt was intercepted by van der Putt, who then fired into the top of the net past a jumping Spendal.
The Red Dragons nearly equalized in the 26th minute with their best opportunity of the night. Off a free kick in a dangerous area down the left side just outside the penalty area, Stone got her head to the ball at the back post. The header was saved by Nelson off of the crossbar, and back into play, where the Herons were able to clear the danger.
Kate Diem (Fairport) sent a free kick from distance over the top of the crossbar in the 42nd minute, as the game stayed 1-0 into halftime.
In the 48th minute, William Smith nearly doubled its advantage, but a shot by Kaleigh Darby hit off the left post.
After a second yellow card in the 57th minute, the Red Dragons were forced to play the final 30-plus minutes down a player.
The Herons controlled possession with the extra player, and held Cortland without a shot on target for the rest of the game to secure the victory. Spendal also made two saves over the final 30 minutes to keep the Red Dragons within striking distance.
