Cortland Sweeps Canton on Senior Day

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team continued its run of recent dominance in the SUNYAC on Saturday afternoon, sweeping conference newcomer Canton, 25-7, 25-12, 25-11, on Senior Day in Corey Gymnasium. Cortland improves to 13-5 (2-0 SUNYAC), while Canton falls to 8-8 (0-2 SUNYAC).
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) contributed 12 kills on a .545 attack percentage for Cortland, while Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) hit .615 and recorded eight kills without an error. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) had a match-high nine digs and four aces. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) handed out 14 assists to lead the Red Dragons. Cortland hit .402 as a team and only committed seven attack errors throughout the match. 
 
Emerson Coulter and Alexas Marshall each had four kills to lead the Kangaroos, and Coulter contributed 10 digs. 
 
After Canton scored the first point in the opening set, Pilkey served to lead a 12-0 Cortland run. The Red Dragons' lead didn't dip below 10 points the rest of the way, as Guedez and Pilkey closed the set with back-to-back kills. 
 
Cortland scored the first four points, and jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the second set. An ace by Madelyn McCormack (Remsen) extended the lead to as many as 13 at 22-9, and Reese Chudoba (Hamburg) closed the set with a kill. 
 
The Red Dragons led 9-3 in the third set after a solo block by Guedez. The lead continued to grow, and three aces in the span of four points by Martens made the score 22-9. Guedez and Pilkey finished the match with consecutive kills to secure the victory.
 
Prior to the match, Cortland honored seniors Pilkey, McCormack, Jennifer Koestner (Syosset), Guedez, Martens, and Hinshaw, as well as student assistant coaches Ben Gardner and Jaidan Degear.
