Ettere's Late Winner Gives #9 Cortland a 2-1 Victory Over Ohio Wesleyan in NCAA First Round

Red Dragons will head to Middlebury to take on Johns Hopkins on Saturday

CORTLAND, NY – Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) scored the game-winning goal with 3:01 remaining in the fourth quarter, and the nationally 9th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons will head to Middlebury for the second round on Saturday, where they will take on Johns Hopkins at 2 p.m.

Cortland improves to 18-1 with the victory, while Ohio Wesleyan finishes the season with a 17-5 record.

Ettere's goal was her 19th of the season to lead the team, and puts her one goal shy of tying Carol Merchant's (1991-94) career record of 74 goals. Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) also netted a goal for the Red Dragons, while Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made two saves in goal for Cortland.

Mary Powers scored Ohio Wesleyan's lone goal, while Meg McCarthy made 12 saves for the Battling Bishops.

Cortland came out flyng in the first quarter, forcing McCarthy into an early save to keep the game scoreless. Less than three minutes in, Trunfio sent a shot past McCarthy, but defender Gabi Dahllof was in great position to clear the ball off the line for a defensive save.

Cortland outshot Ohio Wesleyan 6-1 in the period, with the Battling Bishops' lone shot being blocked.

Early in the second quarter, Trunfio gave Cortland the lead on a third attempt, knocking a rebound into the back of the net after Ettere and Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) made their shots saved by McCarthy.

Cortland carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime, holding a dominant 15-3 edge in shots in the half. Morgan also made one save in the frame for the Red Dragons.

Late in the third quarter, the Battling Bishops tied the score at 1-1, as Powers' shot from the edge of the circle was partially saved by Morgan, but the ball rolled just over the goal line before Morgan was able to dive to knock it away.

Cortland ramped up the pressure in the fourth quarter, holding Ohio Wesleyan without a shot attempt in the quarter. With just over three minutes remaining, the Red Dragons broke through for the game-winning goal. After a penalty corner, Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) had a blast saved by McCarthy. The ball rebounded back out to Ettere near the top of the circle, and Ettere whacked it past McCarthy for Cortland's second rebound goal.

The Red Dragons maintained possession for much of the final minutes to secure the victory.
