Red Dragons Can't Complete Rally in 67-62 Home Loss to Rochester

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to take a 1-point lead with less than three minutes remaining, but visiting Rochester scored eight of the game's last 10 points and the Yellowjackets defeated the Red Dragons, 67-62, in non-league men's basketball action at Corey Gymnasium.
 
Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) led Cortland (1-3) with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. He made 9-of-14 shots from the field. Joel Davis (Watertown) finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks, all in the second half after missing much of the opening half due to foul trouble. Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) added eight points, Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) finished with six points and three assists and Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) hit two 3-pointers and ended with six points and five rebounds.
 
Logan Jagodzinski scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Rochester (3-1). Nate Sock scored 11 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with 2:05 left to give the guests the lead for good, and he added eight rebounds. Corvin Oprea scored 10 points, Ethan McEachern dished out six assists and added six points and five rebounds, and Tomiwa Adetosoye had five assists.
 
Rochester pulled away over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a 44-27 halftime lead. Cortland, however, held the Yellowjackets to eight points over the first 7:25 of the second half and cut its deficit to seven at 52-45.
 
Rochester pushed its lead to 12 at 59-47 on two Oprea free throws with 8:27 left. Cortland responded with a 13-0 run over the next six minutes. Armbrewster hit treys at the 4:20 and 3:08 marks to bring the Red Dragons within one at 59-58 and Coston sank two free throws with 2:25 left to give Cortland a 60-59 lead.
 
Sock's 3-pointer, off an inbounds pass, re-established Rochester's lead at 62-60 with 2:05 left. After a Cortland missed 3-pointer and turnovers for each team, Jagodzinski hit a jumper with less than 32 seconds left to give the guests a 64-60 lead. Coston hit a layup with about 17 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two, but McEachern hit two foul shots with less than 11 seconds left. Cortland missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds and Oprea made a foul shot to close out the scoring.
 
Cortland will be off until Friday, Dec. 6, when the Red Dragons host Potsdam to begin SUNYAC play.
