CORTLAND, NY – Keirra Ettere (Mahopac/Lakeland) netted the game-winning goal for the Red Dragons 1:37 into overtime, and the nationally eighth-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated Skidmore 1-0 in the regular season finale. Cortland improves to 15-1 with the victory, while Skidmore falls to 8-11. The Red Dragons also honored 10 seniors prior to the contest.
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) led Cortland with six shot attempts, scoring her 11th goal of the season.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) stopped both shots she faced in goal, keeping the score tied in the final minutes of regulation.
Victoria Bodnar made 10 saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds.
Cortland fired four shots in the opening period, forcing Bodnar to make three saves, while the Red Dragons held Skidmore without an attempt in the quarter.
The second quarter was much of the same, as Skidmore couldn't get a shot attempt, and Cortland had three more shots on goal saved by Bodnar.
The Red Dragons had one of their best chances to score in the final minute of the third quarter after a penalty stroke was awarded to Cortland, but Bodnar made a diving save to her left to deny
Anna Healey (Holland Patent).
Cortland managed just one stop attempt in the fourth quarter, which went wide by Trunfio. Meanwhile, Skidmore was awarded a penalty corner with 28 seconds remaining, and Morgan had to come up with two huge saves in succession to send the game to overtime.
In the opening minute of overtime,
Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) had her blast from inside the circle saved by Bodnar to keep the game scoreless.
Cortland finally broke through for the winner just a minute later, as
Jamie Snyder (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) made a cross field pass to Ettere. Ettere then dribbled around a defender and shot from just inside the circle. The ball deflected off a defender's stick and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
