Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Strong Second Period Leads #13/14 Cortland to 5-2 Win at Alvernia

READING, PA – The nationally 13/14th-ranked Cortland men's hockey team scored five times in the second period for the second straight night, and earned a 5-2 victory over Alvernia on Saturday evening. Cortland in now 2-0 on the year, while Alvernia is 1-1.

Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts) both scored twice for Cortland. Brady Hildreth (Lockport/New Jersey Titans) scored the other goal for Cortland, the first of his collegiate career.

Johnny Facchini (Succasunna, NJ/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) had two assists, while Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays), Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), Matthew DeSpirt (Hamburg/Northeast Generals), Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars), and Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) each had an assist. Shane Shelest (Pointe-Claire, QC/Wellington Dukes) picked up his first collegiate victory, making 34 saves in goal.

Will Augustine stopped 39 shots in goal for Alvernia, and Easton Inglis and Joey Arnold both scored a goal.

The first period was scoreless, with Shelest making eight saves and Augustine stopping all 13 shots that he faced in the frame.

Berke got the scoring started early in the opening minute of the second with a short-handed goal, cleaning up a rebound after Seitz was stopped twice, first on a breakaway and on another shot from in close.

Hildreth doubled Cortland's advantage a few minutes later, deflecting Facchini's shot from the left point past the goalie.

After a penalty on each side left the teams playing four-on-four, Berke tallied his second goal of the game from a tight angle on the right goal line, collecting DeSpirt's cross-ice pass and wristing it into the top right corner of the goal.

Garnier made it 4-0 by cleaning up a rebound with a backhand into the top left corner of the net after Facchini had his initial shot saved. Just 17 seconds later, Garnier cleaned up another rebound on Mannetta's shot, putting the puck into the left corner of the net just before knocking over the netminder for good measure.

Alvernia pulled a goal back with a power-play goal with just under nine minutes remaining in the period, but Cortland maintained its four-goal edge into the second intermission.

The Golden Wolves pulled to within three late in the third period, taking advantage of a pair of Cortland penalties to score a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 3:05 remaining. Cortland was able to hold off the comeback bid and secure the victory.
