Cortland Tops Plattsburgh 3-1 in SUNYAC Action

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts) scored a pair of goals, and Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped 21-of-22 shots in goal, as the Cortland men's hockey team earned a dominant 3-1 victory at Plattsburgh on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 4-2 (2-1 SUNYAC) on the season, while Plattsburgh drops to 2-3 (1-2 SUNYAC).

Garnier's goals were his team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season, and he has scored in four of the six games this year. Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos) netted his first collegiate goal for Cortland's other goal.

Six different Red Dragons had an assist, including Robert Hyde (North Babylon/New Jersey Titans), Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans), Ryder Brophy (Franklin, PA/Islanders Hockey Club), Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars), and Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks).

Joshua Belgrave scored Plattsburgh's lone goal, with Jake Lanyi providing an assist. Jacob Hearne made 24 saves for the Cardinals.

Cortland came out firing early, forcing Hearne to make seven saves in the opening six minutes. The Red Dragons went on the power play after a Plattsburgh penalty for holding at 6:34, but the Cardinals were able to net a short-handed goal to make it 1-0 just past the eight-minute mark.

Lanyi forced a turnover in the Cortland defensive zone, and passed to Belgrave out front for a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net.

Cortland responded quickly to tie the score with 7:33 remaining in the period. Kyrkostas won an offensive zone faceoff back to Clouden, who carried the puck down the right side towards the goal line. The senior then whipped a pass out front of goal, where Boak was in perfect position to direct a shot past Hearne.

The Red Dragons scored again two minutes later, as Brophy dumped the puck in deep from center ice, and Hyde was the first to reach the puck in the left corner. Hyde then slid the puck out front, where Garnier was able to rip a shot into the right corner of the net to make it 2-1.

Cortland outshot Plattsburgh 11-8 in the opening frame, keeping the one-goal advantage into the intermission.

The Red Dragons took advantage of their second power-play opportunity with over six minutes left in the second period. Cortland cycled the puck down below the goal line on the left side, and Christiano fed Garnier out front, who quickly snapped a shot into the right side of the net to extend the lead to 3-1.

Early in the third period, Cortland committed a tripping penalty to put the Cardinals on the power play, and near the end of the penalty committed another penalty. After successfully killing ten seconds of a 5-on-3, the Red Dragons killed off the remaining time on the second penalty, backed by a pair of saves by Mobley.

Cortland was able to control play over the next minutes, and withstood a 6-on-4 in the final minutes after Plattsburgh pulled the goalie and another Red Dragon penalty to secure the win.
