WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season Sunday at the Lycoming College Invitational. The non-team scoring event featured 10 schools competing in groups broken down by freshman/sophomore and junior/senior sections, with each wrestler guaranteed at least three matches.
 
Of Cortland's 33 wrestlers at the event, 12 were undefeated - three in the junior/senior groups and nine in the freshman/sophomore section.
 
In the freshman/sophomore sections, Cade Sands (Addison) went 4-0 in the 125-pound C bracket with a medical forfeit win, followed by three pins, Culley Bellino (Canastota) was 3-0 with three pins in the 133-pound A bracket and Rocco Futia (Wallkill) went 3-0 with a pin in the 133-pound B bracket. Kenneth Leverich (Smithtown/Smithtown West) pinned all three of his opponents in the 141-pound A bracket, Ryan Closterman (Somerville, NJ) also pinned his three opponents in the 165-pound A bracket and Christian St. John (Huntington) was 3-0 with two pins, also in the 165-pound A bracket.
 
Also in the freshman/sophomore sections, Tymothey Murrell (Batavia) earned a pin among his three wins in the 184-pound B bracket, Bryson Tibbs (Middletown) pinned his three foes in the 197-pound A bracket, and Seth Parker (Moravia) was 3-0 with two pins in the 285-pound A bracket.
 
In the junior/senior section, Cody Merwin (Walton) went 3-0 in the 133-pound A bracket, Shane Walczyk (Eden) pinned his three opponents in the 141-pound bracket, and Dom Vinci (Spencerport) registered a pin, technical fall and major decision in the 149-pound B bracket.
 
Cortland returns to action on Saturday at the Ursinus College Racich Rumble.
