Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#10/7 Cortland Shuts Out #3 Plattsburgh 2-0 in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, NY – Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) and Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) both scored a goal, and Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped 28 shots in goal, as the Cortland women's hockey team, ranked 10th nationally by USCHO.com and seventh nationally DIII Hockey News, came away with a 2-0 shutout of nationally third-ranked Plattsburgh in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 3-0 (1-0 SUNYAC), while Plattsburgh is 1-1 (0-1 SUNYAC).

Aneborn's goal was her second of the season, while Persinger netted her team-leading third goal. Goergen's 28 saves were the most of the season, recording her second shutout. Taryn Raisanen (White Lake, MI/Trine University), Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22), Natalie O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19), and Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) each had an assist for the Red Dragons.

Chloe Lewis stopped 27 shots in goal for the Cardinals, while Mattie Norton, Kayson Ruegge, and Seoyoung Yoo each had four shot attempts for Plattsburgh.

Cortland controlled play for much of the opening period, and was rewarded with the opening goal with under four minutes to go in the frame. Raisanen's shot from the point was deflected wide by a Plattsburgh defender, and Mahoney retrieved the puck behind the goal and center a pass out front to Aneborn, who wristed a shot into the right corner of the net through a screen.

The Red Dragons held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal in the period, and led by a 1-0 score at the intermission.

Plattsburgh had a strong second period, but Goergen was able to stop all 12 attempts in the frame to keep the Cortland edge into the second intermission.

The Red Dragons added an insurance goal early in the third period, as Persinger was able to knock home a rebound through traffic in front after Hlasnick's initial shot was saved. Later in the period, Goergen made a pair of spectacular saves with her glove to keep the score at 2-0.

Plattsburgh pulled the goalie with 2:41 remaining for an extra attacker, but the Red Dragons were able to preserve the shutout, while narrowly missing on a few long-range shots on the empty net.
