COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – Cortland's
Rocco Futia (Wallkill) won the 133-pound weight class and
Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) finished sixth at 184 pounds to highlight the Red Dragons' performances at the Racich Rumble, hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday.
Cortland placed eighth out of 14 schools in the final team standings with 66.5 points, a half point better than the host school. NYU won the team title with 158.5 points. Cortland returns to action this weekend with dual matches Friday at Western New England and Saturday at Williams.
Futia finished 5-0 at 133 pounds to claim the title. He pinned his first three opponents, but in the semifinals he trailed 7-0 in the first minute and 11-6 after one period to Trinity's Ty Trickle. Futia used two takedowns in the second to take a 13-12 lead and he broke a 13-13 tie with a takedown with 1:26 left. He added another takedown about 20 seconds later to secure a 19-15 win. In the finals against Jacob Venezia of NYU, Futia trailed 9-8 before taking an 11-9 lead on a takedown with 17 seconds left. He won 11-10 after Venezia earned a riding time point.
Cunningham lost his opening match at 184 by an 11-8 decision before posting four straight wins - two by pin, one by technical fall and one by major decision. He lost in the fifth-place match to York's Jack Wendel to finish sixth.
Four other Red Dragons finished the day with 3-2 records.
Max DeSousa (Smithtown/Smithtown West) went 3-2 with a pin at 133,
Shane Walczyk (Eden) went 3-2 with two pins and a major decision at 141,
Justin Klein (Miller Place) finished 3-2 at 165 and
Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) was 3-2 with two pins and a major decision at 174.
In addition,
Kenneth Leverich (Smithtown/Smithtown West) pinned his first two opponents at 141 before medically forfeiting the next two matches,
Jack DiMaggio (Smithtown/Smithtown West) was 2-2 with a pin at 157,
Max Kochergin (Sloatsburg/Suffern) went 2-2 with a pin and a technical fall at 165,
Cole Wheet (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) finished 2-2 with a pin at 174, and
Anthony Mayers (Somerville) was 2-2 with a technical fall and major decision at 184.
