GLENSIDE, PA – Meggan Cramer (Cicero/Northwood School) scored to tie the game with under four minutes remaining, and the nationally 11th-ranked Cortland women's hockey team battled back from a three-goal deficit for a 5-5 tie at Arcadia on Sunday afternoon. Cortland is now 6-2-1, while Arcadia is 8-1-1.
Cramer and
Taryn Raisanen (White Lake, MI/Trine University) each had a goal and an assist for Cortland, while
Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East),
Natalie O'Brien (Lockport/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19), and
Drew Kopek (Rome/Syracuse Valley Eagles U19) also scored for the Red Dragons.
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) made 16 saves in goal for Cortland.
Haylee Kos had a goal and two assists for the Knights, while goaltender Hannah Bergeron stopped 45 shots in goal.
Arcadia went up 1-0 just 3:01 into the game, as Karahkwenhawe White found the back of the net for the hosts. The Knights added a pair of goals late in the frame, including one power-play goal, to lead 3-0 after one period of play.
Cortland scored twice the opening ten minutes of the second period to pull to within a goal. First, Kopek scored off of an assist from Raisanen, and O'Brien followed with a goal at the 7:06 mark, assisted by Cramer, to make it 3-2.
Just 28 seconds later, Kos scored for Arcadia to re-establish a two-goal advantage.
In the final five minutes of the period, Karakas tallied her fourth goal of the year, with
Gillian Zwolak (Stoney Creek, ON/Ancaster Avalanche MAA) being credited with an assist.
With under eight minutes remaining in the third period, Raisanen tied the score for Cortland, while
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside U22) and
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) earning assists.
Cortland committed a penalty just minutes later, and Arcadia was able to capitalize with its second power-play goal of the game to lead 5-4. Only 35 seconds later, Crammer knocked in a rebound to tie the score once again and send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, Cortland controlled much of the possession, but was unable to sneak a winning goal past Bergeron. Goergen made a huge save in the final minute to send the game to an exhibition shootout.
In the shootout,
Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored on the first attempt with a deke and shot into the top right of the net. Goergen made a strong pad save on Arcadia's first attempt.
After a save from Bergeron and a goal from Arcadia in round two, Mahoney scored for Cortland in the third round, while Goergen made another stop to secure the shootout victory.
