#14/13 Cortland Rallies in Third Period for 3-1 Win at Canton

CANTON, NY – The Cortland men's hockey team, ranked 14th nationally by USCHO and 13th nationally by DIII Hockey News, scored three times in the third period for a come-from-behind 3-1 victory at Canton in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening. Cortland improves to 7-3 (4-1 SUNYAC), while Canton falls to 4-7 (1-4 SUNYAC) with the defeat.

Dino Mannetta (Wading River/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), Domenic Settimo (East Meadow/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), and Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) each scored a goal for the Red Dragons.

Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped 28-of-29 shots in goal for Cortland. Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) each provided an assist.

Jackson Drysdale scored Canton's lone goal, with Niko Schoner being credited with the assist. Kelson Hooper stopped 44 shots in goal for the Kangaroos.

Four minutes into the opening period, Hooper made a great save on a two-on-one opportunity for the Red Dragons to keep the game scoreless.

The Kangaroos took a hooking penalty just a minute later, but the Red Dragons committed a penalty of their own just 16 seconds into the power play. Neither team could take advantage of the nearly two minutes of 4-on-4 play.

With just over three minutes left in the period, the puck was loose in front of the Canton goal, but Berke's shot was cleared off the goal line, and a follow-up from Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) was also saved by Hooper, as the game stayed scoreless into the intermission.

Canton got on the board first early in the second period, with Drysdale knocking in a rebound after Mobley was able to stopp Schoner's initial shot, making it 1-0 in favor of Canton with just 1:36 off the clock in the period.

The Red Dragons continued to increase the pressure, but couldn't find an equalizer in the frame, but were able to kill off a tripping penalty in the final minutes to keep the deficit at one heading into the third period.

Manetta tied the score for Cortland exactly five minutes into the third period. After a strong backcheck from Berke forced a Canton turnover at the blue line, Mannetta skated from the right point to the left faceoff circle, and ripped a wrist shot into the corner of the net.

Momentum swung to Cortland follow the tying goal, and the Red Dragons seemed destined to net a winner. Settimo delivered the game winner with 4:47 remaining in the period. After Settimo won an offensive zone faceoff, Clouden carried the puck below the goal line before passing back to the point to Settimo. Settimo faked a shot, deked a defender, skated in and fired a wrist shot into the left corner to make it 2-1.

On the other end in the next two minutes on the other end, Mobley made three huge saves, including a pair of breakway chances for the Kangaroos to preserve the Cortland advantage.

In the final minutes, Canton pressed for an equalizer, and had a 6-on-4 chance after pulling the goalie and after the Red Dragons committed a penalty, but Mobley stood strong in net with a pair of solid saves.

Canton then committed a penalty with just over a minute remaining to go to 5-on-4 play. In the final seconds, Berke intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, and Seitz turned and fired from center ice into the empty net to seal the victory.
