ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Cortland's
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet, headlining seven top-5 individual finishes for the Red Dragons at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic on Saturday.
Centrone won the 149-pound weight class, while
Culley Bellino (Canastota) was victorious in the 133-pound weight class.
Dom Vinci (Spencerport) was second at 141 pounds, and
Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) was third at 125 pounds.
David Ensminger (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa),
Rocco Futia (Wallkill), and
Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) all finished fifth at 149 pounds, 133 pounds, and 184 pounds, respectively.
Other Red Dragons in the top eight included
Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport), who was sixth at 125 pounds,
Tymothey Murrell (Batavia), who finished sixth at 184, and
Justin Klein (Miller Place), who was seventh at 157.
Cortland placed fifth out of 12 schools in the final team standings with 122.5 points. Wilkes won the team title with 194 points.
Centrone went 5-0 at 149 pounds to claim his title. He won the first four matches by technical fall. In the first round, he needed just 1:18 to win by tech fall, 19-4. He followed it with another 19-4 tech fall in round two, needing 1:21 to finish that bout. In the third and fourth rounds, Centrone had a 20-4 win by tech fall over McDaniel's Andre Allen in 3:54, before a 20-3 tech fall in 2:16 over Cameron Curva of Ferrum. In the first-place match, Centrone came away with a 6-3 decision over Thomas Monn of McDaniel, his lone match to go the distance.
Bellino went 4-0 on his way to the title at 133. After a bye in the first round, he won by pin in the next three rounds, in eight seconds, 53 seconds, and 19 seconds. In the first-place match, Bellino went up 7-1 in the first period, added a takedown in the second period, and cruised to an 11-3 major decision over Michael Policarpio of Roanoke.
Vinci won his first two matches by pin in the first period, before winning in the semifinal round, 6-3 over Giorgio Difalco of Johns Hopkins. In the finals against Ryan Santiago of Wilkes, he went ahead 5-4 in the first period, before two takedowns and a nearfall in the second period put him behind. He eventually fell by pin to in the third period at 5:17.
Lievano had a pin in his first match at 125, before winning in the quarterfinals by major decision. He fell in the semifinals by pin to Zach Beckner of Ferrum, before rebounding with a 10-5 decision over Justin Adams of Pennsylvania College of Technology in the third-place match.
Futia, Ensminger, and Cunningham each went 4-1 on the day for fifth-place finishes. Futia recorded two pins, including in the fifth-place match, and also had a win in sudden victory.
Ensminger had four wins by decision, and won by no contest in the fifth-place match. Cunningham had all four of his victories come by pin.
