SALISBURY, MD. – Salisbury scored nine unanswered runs to turn a 3-1 deficit into a seven-run lead and then held off a late Cortland rally as the nationally second-ranked Sea Gulls defeated the 10th-ranked Red Dragons, 10-7, in the final contest of a three-game weekend series.
Mat Bruno (Rye) went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) was 2-for-4 with a solo homer for Cortland (0-3).
Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) allowed only one run over the first four innings but was charged with three runs during Salisbury's five-run fifth and took the loss. He allowed five hits in all, struck out six and didn't walk anyone.
Aidan Brinsfield earned the win for Salisbury (3-0). He gave up four hits and three runs, one earned, in five innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Shawn Rosemond, the Sea Gulls' fourth reliever, entered with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and Salisbury clinging to a 10-7 lead. He struck out the first batter he faced to end the threat and allowed only Bruno's two-out triple in the ninth to pick up the save. Alex Craig went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored, Adam Tommer was 2-for-4 with two runs and Mickey Haynes finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead on an error in the top of the first and Salisbury tied the game in the third on a Craig leadoff triple and Max Ehrhardt RBI groundout. Cortland went ahead on Bruno's BRI single in the third and took a 3-1 lead when Smith homered to lead off the fifth.
Salisbury scored five times in the bottom of the fifth. Ehrhardt doubled in two runs, Kyle Brex singled in a run, with another run scoring on an error during the play, and Ben Anderson added an RBI single. The hosts added two in the sixth on a wild pitch and an Anderson bases-loaded hit by pitch, and two more in the seventh on an Andrew Kell pinch-hit two-run double.
Cortland fought back for four runs in the eighth. Three straight walks loaded the bases with no outs and a Bruno groundout scored a run. After a hit batter re-loaded the bases,
Nick Plue's (Guilderland) fielder's choice grounder to third drove in a run. Pinch hitter
JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) followed with a pinch-hit two-run double to make it 10-7. Smith singled and
Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) walked to load the bases before Rosemond came in and recorded the strikeout to end the threat.
