Cortland Wins at #22 Chapman, 6-4, in Late Thursday Contest

ORANGE, CALIF. – Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury) allowed one run on four hits over six innings and Nolan Smith (Hamburg) went 3-for-3 with two walks and two RBI as Cortland defeated nationally 22nd-ranked Chapman, 6-4, late Thursday night in the first of a three-game set between the non-league foes at Chapman's Hart Park.

The teams will meet again Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific (6 p.m. Eastern) and Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific.

Beers earned his first win of the season. He struck out six batters and walked two, and the lone run he allowed came in the bottom of the first inning. Devin Georgetti (Rochester/Gates Chili) pitched the final three innings for his first save, allowing three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Cortland finished with 10 hits. In addition to Smith's three hits, Nick Chemotti (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 2-for-4 with two runs, Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) finished 2-for-4, and Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) hit a two-run triple during a four-run fifth inning that broke a 1-1 tie.

Chapman starter Colin Godfrey allowed five runs over four and two thirds innings for the loss. He struck out five and walked three. Nick Naccarato was 3-for-5 with two doubles and Kai Osaka went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Panthers (8-6). Osaka's two-run double drew Chapman with 6-4 as part of a three-run eighth inning, but Georgetti struck out the next two batters to escape further trouble.
