Lance Meeson (shown from earlier this year) placed seventh on the 1-meter board and is the region's NCAA first alternate
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cortland senior
Lance Meeson (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) placed seventh on the 1-meter board during the final day of competition at the NCAA Division III Region 4 (Northeast/South) Men's Diving Regional, hosted by RIT.
Meeson posted a score of 445.00 points. Geneseo's Trent Makowiec won the event with 538.10 points.
Meeson narrowly missed earning the fifth and final NCAA Division III Championship berth from the region and will be the region's first alternate for nationals, which will be held March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C.
The five berths were determined by looking at first-place finishes on both boards, then second place, etc. The first two spots were filled by Alfred State's Conor Compton, Friday's 3-meter champion, and Makowwiec as the 1-meter champ. The next slot was taken by Geneseo's Greg Meder, the 1-meter runner-up (Makowiec, the 3-meter runner-up, already qualified), and the fourth spot was claimed by RIT's Luke Albanese, who finished third on the 3-meter board (he was also third on the 1-meter board).
The final spot came down to Meeson, who finished fourth on the 3-meter board Friday, and 1-meter fourth-place finisher Gellert Kish of RIT. With only one spot left, the combination of the scores from both days was used to determine the qualifier. Kish had a two-day score of 923.60 (464.70 plus 458.90) and Meeson was just 0.55 points behind at 923.05 (478.05 plus 445.00).
