Cortland Holds Off Oneonta, 6-5

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland led by five runs entering the bottom of the seventh and held off a late rally by Oneonta over the final three innings and the visiting Red Dragons defeated the host Red Dragons, 6-5, to complete a three-game, two-day sweep in SUNYAC baseball action.

Cortland improved to 9-8-1 overall and is 3-0 in the conference. Oneonta is now 7-10 overall and 0-3 in the league. Cortland will host Plattsburgh in a single game Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Will McCarthy (Farmingdale) earned the win, allowing just one unearned run on three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two. Greg Mays (Troy/Tamarac), Cortland's fourth reliever, entered with one out in the bottom of the eighth. He allowed two hits, including a Logan Hutter RBI single that cut Cortland's lead to 6-5, but struck out the next batter to end the inning. Oneonta put the potential tying run on second with one out in the ninth after an error following a strikeout in the dirt, but Mays induced a flyout and then struck out the final batter for the save.

Cortland scored twice in the first on a Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) RBI groundout and a Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) RBI double. Jon Munoz (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) added an RBI groundout in the second and Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) doubled in a run in the third to extend the lead to 4-0.

Oneonta scored in the sixth after a one-out error and a two-out Anthony Foglia RBI single. Cortland scored twice in the top of the seventh on a Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) leadoff homer and a Kelly sacrifice fly, but Oneonta answered with three in the bottom of the inning on a Josh Gilkey RBI single and a Liam Kaseta two-run single. On the Kaseta single, however, a runner was thrown out trying to advance from first to third to end the inning.

Kyle Rosenberger started for Oneonta and took the loss. He gave up three runs, two earned, in one-plus innings. Derek Shea, the last of three relievers, tossed three hitless and scoreless innings to finish the game. He hit the first batter he faced before retiring nine straight.
