Comeback Thwarted by Cabrini in 12-11 Home Setback

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team scored four of the last five goals in the game, including the final two goals just five seconds apart late in the fourth quarter, to grab a 12-11 victory over Cortland in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Grady Field.

Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough) each recorded four points for the Red Dragons (2-1) with Rothman finishing with three goals and an assist and Scanlon picking up two goals and two assists.

Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) tallied two goals and an assist, while Klay Stuver (Fairport) also netted two goals for Cortland. Alex Thrasher (Vestal) and Bradley Cunningham (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored a goal, and Josh Michel (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Caden Yancey (Fayettevile/Fayetteville-Manlius) collected an assist.

Goalie Travis Wagner (Penfield) registered 10 saves for the Red Dragons. Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) won 11-of-18 faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls. Conner Gallagher (Northport) contributed four ground balls and two caused turnovers, Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) collected six ground balls, Logan Schanars (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) and Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each secured four ground balls.

Connor Herraiz paced Cabrini (4-2) with six points on a goal and five assists. Tommy Vaughan recorded three goals and an assist, and Mason Lenart and Griffin Ganster each netted two goals.

Goalie Brayden Skipper stopped 11 shots. John McCormick won 13 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls. Peter Hewitt finished with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Bear Evans and Matt Williams each recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter before Cortland cut its deficit to 6-4 at the half. The Red Dragons then took a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter and went ahead, 10-8. Cabrini tied the game, but Rothman gave Cortland back the lead at 11-10 with 3:26 remaining. Vaughan tied the game at the 2:23 mark, and Herraiz scored the game winner just five seconds later off a Cabrini faceoff win.

The teams traded turnovers following the ensuing faceoff. After a Cavalier timeout, Thrasher caused a turnover with just under a minute to play but Cortland threw the ball away on a long clearing pass and Cabrini ran out the clock to seal the win.
