ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 11-7 non-conference win at the University of Rochester under the lights Wednesday evening at Rochester's Towers Field.
The Red Dragons (16-8-1) will host Vermont State University Castleton in a non-league game Thursday at 12:30 p.m., with the start time moved earlier due to the weather forecast.
Cortland out-hit the Yellowjackets by a 13-8 count and also drew six walks.
Mat Bruno (Rye) finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, a hit by pitch and five RBI and
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) went 3-for-4 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) was 2-for-5 with a walk and three runs.
Rochester (12-12) was led offensively by Luke Blozy, who finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. Josh Leadam went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and Dylan Stezzi ended 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.
Cam Darrow (South Glens Falls) started for Cortland and went two innings plus two batters into the third. He gave up two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Greg Mays (Troy/Tamarac) was deemed the Red Dragons' most effective reliever and earned the win since Cortland took the lead in the first and never relinquished it. Now 2-1 on the season, Mays entered with two outs in the fourth and allowed a Leadam RBI double, but was strong after that with only one walk issued and three strikeouts through the end of the sixth.
Justin Patsey (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) tossed the final three innings for his third save. He gave up two hits and two runs, one earned, with four strikeouts and one walk.
Rochester starter Matt Casiero allowed six runs on seven hits over three and two thirds innings. Mark Aaronson, the second of three relievers, gave up just one run in four innings with four strikeouts.
Bonacci and
Nick Chemotti (Syracuse/West Genesee) led off the game with walks and scored on a Bruno two-run double, and Bruno scored two batters later on
Adam Mieczkowski's (Vestal) sacrifice fly to give Cortland the early 3-0 lead. Rochester scored two in the third on an Alec Ellison sac fly and Stezzi RBI single, but the Red Dragons answered with three in the fourth on
Nick Marola's (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) RBI single, a Bruno bases-loaded hit by pitch and a
Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) bases-loaded walk.
The hosts cut their deficit to 6-5 in the fourth with three runs, including a Blozy RBI double, a wild pitch and Leadem's RBI double. Cortland responded again with two in the top of the fifth. Smith and
Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) each walked and moved up on a
Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) sac bunt. Pinch hitter
JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) followed with a two-run triple to make it 8-5.
The game stayed that way until the eighth. Smith's RBI single pushed the lead to 9-5 in the top of the inning, but Rochester scored twice in the bottom of the frame - once on a Blozy RBI double and once on an error - to draw within 9-7. Cortland added two unearned insurance runs in the ninth. Two batters reached via errors and, with two outs, Bruno hit a two-run double to right. Patsey retired the side in order, the last two by strikeout, to seal the win.
