Red Dragons Sweep Brockport in Home-Opening Doubleheader

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team, playing its first home games of the season, swept Brockport, 14-4 and 9-7, in a SUNYAC doubleheader. The first game was called after the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland was playing its latest home opener since the 1995 season. The Red Dragons were originally scheduled to be home versus Hamilton on March 27 but that doubleheader was moved to Hamilton due to the weather. Cortland (14-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) will host three-time defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo in a doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Cortland 14, Brockport 4 (5 inn.)

Cortland scored in each of its four offensive innings, highlighted by seven runs in the third inning. The Red Dragons led 14-0 after four innings before Brockport scored four times in the top of the fifth.

McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) went the distance for her ninth win in 10 decisions. She allowed five hits and two walks and struck out five in five innings. Barry also helped her cause at the plate by going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBI. Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs as Cortland finished with 12 hits.

Gina Meyers (Liverpool) went 1-for-3 with a sac fly and three RBI and Danielle DeBonis (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and two RBI. Tori Reich (Cornwall) finished 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs.

Brockport starter Kendall Phillips allowed 10 runs, but only four earned, in two and two thirds innings to take the loss. Olivia Simone led the Golden Eagles offensively with a 2-for-3 outing, including a double, and Paige Wentland drove in two runs.

Scotto singled in two runs in the first to give Cortland the lead. Reich's RBI groundout made it 3-0 in the second. The Red Dragons' seven-run third was highlighted by two-run doubles from both DeBonis and Wright, a Meyers sac fly and a Scotto RBI single. Meyers singled in two runs and Barry hit a two-run double in the fourth. Brockport scored in the fifth on a Riley Barrett RBI double, a Wentland two-run double and a Natalie Faas RBI triple.

Cortland 9, Brockport 7

Brockport struck first with an Aubrey Ennis RBI single in the top of the first, but Cortland responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Reich and Meyers led off with singles and, with one out, Barry singled home a run. With two outs, Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) hit back-to-back RBI infield singles and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) drove them both in with a two-run triple to center. Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) followed with an RBI bunt single.

Cortland pushed the lead to 8-1 with single runs in the third, on a Koch RBI double, and the fourth, on Scotto's RBI single. Brockport, however, fought back to make things exciting. The Golden Eagles scored in the fifth on a Caitlyn Dailey RBI single and brought home four runs in the sixth on a Kellie Gentile pinch-hit RBI single, a Simone RBi single, a Barrett RBI groundout and a wild pitch that scored a run.

Cortland tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 9-6. Wright led off with a walk, went to second on a one-out Scotto single and scored on Koch's two-out double to left center. Brockport turned an error, an Erin Dougherty double and a Tori Angelo sac fly into a run to cut the Cortland lead to 9-7 before a flyout to right ended the game.

Westenberg pitched six innings for the win. She gave up six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Barry pitched the seventh for her first save of the season, allowing one hit and an unearned run. Cortland finished with 16 hits. Koch went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI and Scotto was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Ornstein went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Westenberg finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Reich was 2-for-4.

Brockport (6-16, 0-4 SUNYAC) fashioned an 11-hit attack, led by Dailey going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Simone finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, and Ennis going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Hadley Alguire took the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in two innings. Phillips gave up two runs over the final four innings.
