BUFFALO, N.Y. -
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) combined for the win in the opener and Westenberg threw a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as Cortland swept host Buffalo State, 9-2 and 9-0, in SUNYAC softball play. The second game ended after six innings due to the eight-run rule. Cortland improved to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in the SUNYAC. Buffalo State is now 13-12 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

Barry, now 12-1 on the season, allowed two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Westenberg notched her second save of the season. She entered in the sixth with a runner on and Cortland up 5-2 and retired all six batters she faced over the last two innings.
Tori Reich (Cornwall) was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI and Barry went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) and
Gina Meyers (Liverpool) each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) was 1-for-3 with a double, walk and two runs scored. Kaitlyn Schnitzer was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Mya Hurley went 2-for-3 with a double and Kenzie Scott and Caitlyn Parsons each finished 2-for-4 for Buffalo State. Izzy Pezdek took the loss after giving up three runs in one-plus innings.
Cortland scored twice in the first on RBI singles from Meyers and Scheibe and twice in the second - once on a rundown between third and home after an infield grounder and once on Reich's sac fly. The hosts plated a run in the second on a Schnitzer RBI single. Cortland tallied a run in the fifth when Barry led off with a double and pinch runner
Emily Stavola (Somers) eventually scored on a
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) sac fly.
The Bengals picked up a run in the sixth on a Hurley double and Schnitzer RBI single before Westenberg entered. Cortland tacked on four unearned runs in the top of the seventh with the help of two Bengals' errors along with RBI singles by
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) and Reich.

Westenberg allowed just one baserunner on a Lexi Quagliana infield single with one out in the second. Westenberg finished with three strikeouts in six innings and is now 7-2 on the season.
Cortland did most of its damage offensively with a six-run second inning. Westenberg led off with a double, McAnally drew a one-out walk and
Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) singled to load the bases.
Kayla Santo (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North) walked to force in a run, Reich hit an RBI single, and an error on a fielder's choice grounder by Meyers allowed a run to score to make it 3-0.
Shannon Scotto (Putman Valley/Lakeland) followed with a two-run single and the final run scored on an error.
Barry singled in a run in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0, and the Red Dragons added two in the sixth on an error and a Meyers RBI infield single.
Four Red Dragons finished with multiple hits. Meyers was 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and two runs and Westenberg and Wright each went 2-for-4. Reich was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Buffalo State starter Madison Lucas allowed six runs, four earned, in two innings and Schnitzer gave up three runs, one earned, over four innings.
