DeLawder's 11th-Inning Homer Lifts Cortland Over Host New Paltz, 10-9

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) hit a tiebreaking homer in the top of the 11th and Cortland defeated host New Paltz, 10-9, in a SUNYAC baseball matchup. Cortland improved its record to 23-9-1 overall and extended its lead in the conference with a 12-1 mark. New Paltz is now 21-12 overall and 7-6 in the league.

Each team finished with 10 hits in the back-and-forth affair. New Paltz jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Cortland scored four in the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth to go up 7-5, but the Hawks plated three runs in the sixth to take an 8-7 advantage and had a chance to go up by five runs but Cortland left fielder Mat Bruno (Rye) made a leaping catch over the fence to rob Dillon Ristano of a three-run homer to end the inning.

Cortland regained the lead, 9-8, in the top of the eighth on Bruno's two-run homer. New Paltz tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Nick Harvey doubled and eventually scored on Michael Ascanio's RBI groundout.

The Hawks' only baserunner versus Banks came in the 11th on a two-out Ristano walk. Pinch runner Justin Ortiz stole second but Banks struck out the next hitter to end the game.
