Red Dragons Close Regular Season with 17-6 Win vs. New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team held New Paltz scoreless for a stretch of 23 minutes, 34 seconds spanning the first to third quarters in earning a 17-6 victory versus the Hawks Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Grady Field. The Red Dragons improved to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the SUNYAC and host Potsdam in the conference semifinals Wednesday, May 1, at 6 p.m.

During the game, Cortland junior Caden Yancey (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) became the 60th player in program history to reach 100 career points (63 goals, 41 assists), leading the Red Dragons with six points on two goals and four assists.

Colton Smith (South Bristol/Penn Yan Academy) paced the Red Dragons with a game-high three goals. Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East), Bradley Cunningham (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) each netted a pair of goals. Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) tallied a goal and two assists, Klay Stuver (Fairport), Gannon Houghton (Morrisville/Cazenovia), Matt Franzoni (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) and AJ Surian (Bay Shore) scored one goal apiece, while six others contributed an assist.

Travis Wagner (Penfield) stopped nine shots and allowed just four goals in 53:30 before giving way to Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), who made one save over the final 6:30 for Cortland. Aidan McHugh (Maine/Maine-Endwell) secured 6-of-9 faceoffs and collected four ground balls, and Rich Finn (LaGrange/Arlington) won 6-of-10 faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls. Travis Moehringer (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) finished with four ground balls and three of the team's 16 caused turnovers. Rothman and Conner Gallagher (Northport) each had four ground balls.

James Flanagan led New Paltz (5-10, 1-6 SUNYAC) with a goal and two assists. Anthony Senecal, Ethan Scully, Thomas Armetta, Zach Schmidt and Deacon Hill each netted a goal, and Owen Craker picked up an assist.

Goalie Ryan Steinhart registered 23 saves and collected three ground balls. Quinn Tucker won 10 faceoffs and scooped up seven ground balls. Zachary Leung  and Ryan Kaelin each caused two turnovers, Scully recorded four ground balls and Colin Cleary added three ground balls.

The teams traded the first four goals of the game before Cortland put the defensive clamp on the Hawks and steadily pulled away, building a 7-2 lead at the half. Smith netted all three of his goals in the opening 30 minutes of play, while Yancey hit the 100-point mark with his first goal at 12:17 of the second quarter.

Stuver and Yancey scored early in the third quarter to push the Red Dragon advantage to 9-2 before Senecal ended the New Paltz drought with a man-up goal at 8:52 of the quarter. Cortland responded with a six-goal run, two to close out the third quarter and four to open the fourth quarter, to build a 15-3 lead with 7:14 to play. The Hawks netted three of the last five goals for the 17-6 final.
