Red Dragons Advance to SUNYAC Final with 15-7 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's lacrosse team held Brockport scoreless for the first 22 minutes, 50 seconds of the game and pulled away late in earning a 15-7 win in the SUNYAC Semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Grady Field. The top-seeded Red Dragons improved to 13-4 and host second-seeded Geneseo in the championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. The fourth-seeded Golden Eagles dropped to 10-7.

Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) led Cortland with six goals and two assists and added two caused turnovers. Amy Hoeffner (Bay Shore) netted five goals, secured eight draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Rachel Janis (Laurel/Mattituck) tallied a goal and two assists, Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) recorded a goal and an assist, Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) and Mackenzie Beck (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) each scored a goal and Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) and Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) chipped in with one assist.

Goalie Margaret Morgan (New Fairfield, CT) registered six saves for the Red Dragons. Julie Kadletz (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) collected four ground balls and won three draws, while Melillo and Amanda Squillini (Stony Point/North Rockland) each caused two turnovers.

Alayna Foos paced Brockport's offense with three goals. Cassidy Burnash tallied two goals and two assists, and Tristan Davis and Sarah Kilburn scored a goal.

Goalie Arianna Reed stopped 11 shots in 57:37. The Golden Eagles played with an empty net and an extra field player over the final 2:23. Burnash won four draws, and Foos scooped up three ground balls.

Cortland opened up a 5-0 lead after the first quarter of play as Cashman and Hoeffner each scored twice and Iapoce netter her goal. Dempsey made it a 6-0 game before Foos ended the Golden Eagle scoring drought at 7:10 of the second quarter. The Red Dragons then scored two of the next three goals to hold an 8-3 lead at the half.

Brockport cut its deficit to 10-5 after three quarters as Foos scored twice, and the Golden Eagles pulled to within 11-7 at the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter. Cortland took advantage of a two-minute non-releasable yellow card on Brockport with goals from Hoeffner and Beck to go ahead, 13-7, with 6:59 remaining. Cashman pushed the lead to 14-7 at 3:47, and she completed the scoring into an empty net with 1.5 seconds on the clock for the 15-7 final.
