Red Dragons Split Two Games During Day 2 of SUNYAC Tourney, Need Three Wins Sunday

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team opened the second day of action at the SUNYAC tournament with an 8-1 win over fourth-seeded Oneonta before falling to top-seeded New Paltz, 2-0.

The second-seeded Red Dragons (27-8), now 2-1 at the tournament, need to win three games on Sunday to claim the title. Cortland will face sixth-seeded Buffalo State at 11 a.m. and, if victorious, would have to beat New Paltz twice. The tournament must conclude by early Sunday evening.

Gina Meyers (Liverpool) went 1-for-4 versus Oneonta to extend her hitting streak to 33 games, but the streak ended after going 0-for-3 versus New Paltz. Entering this season, only four players were listed in the NCAA Division III record book with hitting streaks of 33 or more games, with the record at 44 games by Moravian's Heather Bortz from 2003-04, followed by Plattsburgh's Jennifer Groat at 38 games from 2017-18.

Cortland 8, Oneonta 1

McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) allowed only two hits and one unearned run in seven innings for her 16th win in 18 decisions this spring. She struck out one and walked one.

Cortland scored in the first when Tori Reich (Cornwall) led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Halle Wright's (Ballston Spa) two-out double. Cortland broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Reich, Meyers, Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) and Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) hit consecutive RBI singles, and later in the inning Barry and Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) hit a sacrifice fly.

Oneonta's run came in the third via a one-out error, a Delaney Haley sac bunt and an Adriana Fiori RBI single.

Scotto finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and was one of seven Cortland players to register a hit. Wright was 1-for-1 with a double and two walks and Reich went 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs.

For Oneonta, Haley and Fiori each had a hit. Emily Brown allowed three runs in an inning and a third to suffer the loss.

New Paltz 2, Cortland 0

Westenberg and New Paltz's Lindsay Roman locked up in a pitcher's duel in the "winner's bracket final" in a game that lasted only an hour and 20 minutes. Roman, now 16-4, tossed a four-hit shutout with two strikeouts and one walk. Ironically, Roman was the last pitcher to hold Meyers hitless in last year's SUNYAC tournament. Westenberg gave up two runs on eight hits with a strikeout and two walks and fell to 11-4.

New Paltz (34-5) scored in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Rhionna Bianchini led off with a single and was bunted to second by Isabella Shepherd. Lauren Serrao singled to left, with Bianchini holding at second, and Jaycee Filancia walked to load the bases. Jackie Rometo followed with a grounder to short and Bianchini was safe at home on the play. The Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth on Kelly Marmorowski's leadoff homer.

Cortland's best scoring threat came in the fourth inning when Westenberg and Wright each singled with one out, but Roman struck out the next hitter and induced a pop-up to end the inning.

Reich finished 2-for-3 and Westenberg was 1-for-2 with a walk for Cortland. Serrao went 3-for-3 and Shepherd was 2-for-2 for the Hawks.
