Cortland Blanks Potsdam Twice, Moves Into Tie for Second in SUNYAC Standings

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland pitching allowed only a combined three hits as the Red Dragons shut out visiting Potsdam twice in a pair of SUNYAC softball games. The Red Dragons won both games 8-0, with each called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
 
Cortland (23-7, 13-3 SUNYAC) is tied for second in the SUNYAC standings with Geneseo with one doubleheader remaining for each team - Cortland at home versus Plattsburgh at noon (moved back to its original start time) and Geneseo at home against Oneonta, which is currently fourth at 12-4 in the league. New Paltz has clinched the top spot and the hosting rights for the six-team conference tournament May 9-12.
 
Cortland 8, Potsdam 0 (5 inn.)
 
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tossed a two-hit shutout to improve to 14-2 on the year. She struck out two and didn't walk anyone in five innings. Potsdam's Kaylee Dobransky hit the game's first pitch for a single and Rebecca Holmes singled to lead off the fifth.
 
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and Gina Meyers (Liverpool) was 2-for-3 with a triple, double, RBI and two runs scored for the Red Dragons. Kaeli McAnally (Islip) went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run, and Tori Reich (Cornwall) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Meyers tripled with one out in the first and scored on Scotto's two-out single to make it 1-0. Cortland's four-run third inning featured two-run singles by Scotto and McAnally, and Cortland's three runs in the fourth scored on a Reich RBI single, a Meyers RBI double and a Scotto RBI single. Potsdam starter Lexie Cottrill allowed eight runs, four earned, in three and a two thirds innings.

Kim Westenberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) tossed her second one-hitter of the season and is now 9-3 on the season. She struck out nine batters. Westenberg allowed a single to Dobransky on the game's first pitch and then retired the last 15 batters she faced.
 
Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) hit a two-run homer, following a Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) two-out infield single, to give Cortland a 2-0 lead in the second. In the fourth, the Red Dragons had a runner on second with two outs before pushing across five runs. The first run scored on a McAnally bases-loaded walk and pinch hitter Gabby Baumann (Colonie) cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right field line. Reich followed with an RBI single. Cortland ended the game with a run in the fifth as Wright singled with two outs, stole second and scored on an error. Wright finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two steals and three runs scored.
 
Anna Brown started for Potsdam (13-19, 4-12 SUNYAC) and allowed seven runs on only three hits in three and two thirds innings. She walked four and struck out one.
