#13 Cortland Shuts Out St. Lawrence 2-0

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Yasin Choukri (Wilton, Ct.) scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute, and the Red Dragons tacked on an insurance goal four minutes later, as the nationally 13th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence on Holloway Field on Sunday afternoon. Cortland moves to 2-0-0 with the win, while St. Lawrence is now 0-2-0 on the year.

Matt Shultz (Oneonta) registered a goal and an assist in the game, along with two shots on goal. Choukri and Mateo Marra (Ossining) led the team with three shots on goal apiece, with Choukri scoring the aforementioned winner and Marra adding an assist. Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, Tx./Southwest Christian) stopped all four shots on goal for his first shutout of the year.

Sam Pijpers, Ryan Campbell, Henry Brown, and Baker Diaz each had shots on target for the Saints, and George Charalambous made seven saves in goal for St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence started quickly and looked dangerous in the opening minutes, but the back line of the Red Dragons stood strong to keep the Saints without a shot on target in the opening half hour. St. Lawrence had its best opportunity of the game in the 33rd minute, but Ott made himself big to deny Campbell at close range, and Brown's follow-up bicycle kick attempt flash just over the bar.

Grant Gilmer looked to have a great chance to score in the 40th minute, before Alex Lessman (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) slid across to block the shot. Marra's header at the back post after a cross from the right side by Flavio Di Santo (Rome, Italy/Ecampus) went just wide in the final minute of the half for Cortland's best opportunity of the half.

The Red Dragons came out of halftime flying around the field, and had two strong opportunities from Logan Comfort (Cazenovia) go over the top of the crossbar, and a goal-scoring opportunity called back due to offsides, in the opening ten minutes of the half. In the 63rd minute, Choukri fed Comfort inside the 18-yard box, but his curling right-footed shot went just outside the right post.

The Red Dragons finally broke through in the 80th minute, as Shultz dribbled around a pair of defenders down the right side before sliding a pass on the ground to Choukri for a shot that took a slight deflection off the leg of a St. Lawrence defender before nestling into the back of the net.

At the 83:12 mark, the Red Dragons sealed the win with a second goal to complete the scoring. Shultz knocked in a rebound for his second goal of the season after Charalambous did well to get a hand on Marra's initial shot from the left side.
