#2 Cortland Draws #8 Rowan 1-1 in Top-10 Matchup

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student Mateo Marra (Ossining) scored his sixth goal of the season on a free kick in the 87th minute, as the nationally-second ranked Cortland men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with nationally-eighth ranked Rowan in a top-10 matchup on Holloway field on Wednesday evening. Cortland goes to 5-0-1 on the year, while Rowan moves to 2-1-2.

Marra led Cortland with two shots on goal, while seniors Jack Pinnata (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage), Yasin Choukri (Wilton, C.T.) and Matt Shultz (Oneonta) each had a shot on target. Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, T.X/Southwest Christian) stopped four shots in goal for the Red Dragons.

Ryan Cleary scored for Rowan, while Jake Homowitz added an assist. Goalkeeper Dylan Aportela stopped four shots in goal for the Profs.

Rowan had the first opportunity to score in the sixth minute off a corner, but Mason Martelloni had his header cleared off the line by Ott. Just two minutes later, Choukri attempted to get on the end of a cross from Shultz, but Aportela came off his line to intercept the ball before Choukri could get an attempt off.

In the 16th minute, Marra took a shot from distance, but the ball bounced off the inside of the left post and back into play. Pinnata slid across to block a dangerous shot by Rowan's Johnny Troiano three minutes later to keep the game scoreless. In the 41st minute, Marra's header after a cross by Shultz went over the crossbar as the game remained scoreless into halftime.

Cortland had an excellent opportunity to score in the 59th minute, as Marra's cross off of a free kick fell to Choukri, but Aportela was able to make himself big to stop the forward from giving Cortland the lead. Five minutes later, Troiano was denied by a strong save from Ott on a shot into the top left corner of the net.
Ott was quick to come off his line in the 76th minute, rushing to get a hand on a shot after Troaino had gotten behind the defense and attempted the chip the Cortland keeper. Pinnata was able to get back and clear the ball off the line to escape the danger.

Rowan got on the board in the 86th minute with a header into the bottom right corner of the net by Cleary off of a corner kick from Homowitz. Just one minute later, Cleary was sent off after a red card for stopping a promising Cortland attack just outside the penalty area.

Marra was able to take advantage on the ensuing free kick, bending a shot around a wall of Rowan defenders and beyond the outstretched arms of Aportela to tie the score with 3:14 remaining. The Red Dragons pressed for a winner in the final minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net again as the game ended level.
